Does anyone know where in OC one could find great baklava, (and other Middle Eastern sweets), made with butter, rather than shortening or veg oil?

I did not know you could make baklava with shortening or veg oil, have you had it made that way? Try Sarkis in Anaheim, they do some very good baklava.

Agree - Sarkis in Anaheim will do you proud.

Bear in mind that many places use clarified butter so that it doesn't darken unnecessarily during baking, but it's still butter. I've never seen anyone use oil or shortening.

I agree, it shouldn't be made with oil or shortening, but it is, all over the place. I assume for reasons of cost or dietary restrictions. Packaged stuff has it listed right there on the label, and I always ask at pastry counters.

Sarkis, huh? Is this the place on Ball Road? Actual butter?

Yes, on Ball west of Brookhurst, next to Zankou Chicken. Call ahead if you want to make 100% absolutely sure.

The guy on the phone just now said butter, after seeming to check w/someone else. I'll give it a try, thanks.
