6 Days of Eating in Nashville
My husband and I are visiting family in Nashville. We moved to a different state a little over two years ago. I am happy to report several new restaurants and new discoveries. We have had a good eating vacation so far. Should I be ashamed that my every excursion revolves around food? At least I know there are sympathetic souls here.
Joe’s Bar-B-que and Fish
Oh, MY God. This is the best Q I have had in years, if not ever. I had the pork on cornbread. The pork was hot, juicy, fresh and savory. The hot barbecue sauce was sparingly applied and had a nice, but not overpowering, heat to it. It was served sandwiched between two soft, buttery, hot cornbread pancakes. The whole sandwich could easily serve two people, but of course I ate most of it myself. There wasn't a great place to sit as it was quite chilly and I didn't want to brave the restaurant's outdoor gazebo. We sat in the car and scarfed down our food in a parking lot across the street from the restaurant. We were also able to buy beer at the store across the street. I don't even care if you call me white trash. It was worth it.
East Side Fish
I ordered the catfish sandwich and fries. The fish had a medium cornmeal-type breading that was very slightly spicy. Two large fillets were served between two pieces of white bread and came with pickles, onions, lettuce and mustard. Kraft tartar sauce was available in plastic packets (a weak point). There was a light splash of hot sauce on the sandwich. Overall, the fish was good, seemed relatively fresh, but it did not strike me as a meal I would drive across town to eat. The fries were thick cut, spicy and fresh. The people working in the restaurant were very friendly and helpful. We were able to sit at their single picnic table and enjoy our meal.
El Tapatio-- to be continued! Will eat there tomorrow. This is a favorite local taco stand.
This was the second time we've dined at this lovely restaurant. It is a bit more upscale than the other places we visited on this trip, but still fairly casual. At our table, food included a mahi mahi over gnocchi special, iceberg wedge salads with bacon, bleu cheese and red pepper jam, pork tenderloin with horseradish whipped potatoes, and a special bowl of tomato soup. Dessert consisted of shared portions of key lime pie and molten chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream. The standouts of the meal, although everything was prepared well, were the gnocchi, pork tenderloin and iceberg wedge salad. The service was friendly and prompt. The wine list is short but had a few interesting choices. The ambience of the restaurant is casual, modern/rustic, and romantic.
Family Wash-- to be continued. Will eat there tonight. Plan on getting Shepherd's Pie.
Pied Piper Creamery
We tried two kinds of ice cream at this cute little place. I think it used to be the Red Wagon, which was a great place for breakfast... but I digress. We chose "Trailer Trash" that is basically the vanilla ice cream with a bunch of candy and cookies thrown in. Reminds me of Ben and Jerry's Chubby Hubby. My husband described it as above average, but not highly remarkable. I chose the oatmeal cookie flavor. I thought about getting the chocolate/cayenne pepper flavor, but they said it was exceptionally hot that day and I wanted to taste the ice cream, not just pepper. The oatmeal cookie flavor was rich and had yummy bits of spicy oatmeal cookies and raisins strewn through it. I would definitely get it again.
To finish my synopsis...
This is a new location-- a sit-down restaurant slightly north of where the original taco stand, but still on Nolensville Road. The only thing I have ever ordered is the chicken burrito. It is so good I just can't bring myself to try anything else! The chicken is cooked on an outdoor barbecue. It's not just dry white meat, either. The chicken is juicy, smokey and tender. The burrito also has beans and rice on it. It was just as good as I remembered it. The portion was so large, I ate half and took the other half to eat later in the airport on the way home. I screwed up and left it in the airport as I boarded the plane! Imagine my chagrin.
A very cozy, unassuming, neighborhood place inhabited by aging hipsters (I can say it because I am one, too). The music was loud but great and the food was fabulous. I couldn't believe the quality cranked out from what looked like a two foot prep area and a countertop convection oven! Wow! Potato chips with gorgonzola and bacon! Shepherd's pie with lean ground lamb (and beef?) with an impossibly fluffy layer of whipped potatoes atop it. The secret to the wonder of the Shepherd's Pie was the toasty thin layer of cheese that floated atop the potatoes. You gotta try it!!!
