Two days in Chiang Mai?
I was supposed to go to Bangkok last night, but because the political situation was still so tense we decided to switch our tickets and head to Chiang Mai. Of course we got off the plane and immediately heard that the situation in Bangkok died down, but we're here now, and HUNGRY!
The protests in CM were pretty serious this week too.
You're there for Songkran. I hope you enjoy the "festivities".
Since this is the busiest time of year in the tourist areas, I'd stay away from them, specifically the ThaPai Gate area.
My recommendations would be:
Huen Phen at lunch for authentic northern Thai
Khao Soi at the Thanin Market
If you're in the Nimmanhaemin area, you should try:
"Outdoors" on the unnamed cross street one block east of Nimmanhaemin between Soi 5 & 7.
Nimman Kitchen in the big parking lot across from the Hillside 4 Condotel.
The (unnamed in English) Isaan restaurant on Nimmanhaemin Soi 5, just off Sirimankalajarn.
For an excellent vegetarian lunch (I'm not a vegetarian):
The restaurant in the back of Wat Suan Dok.
Khun Churn buffet on Nimmanhaemin Soi 17.
