Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in the Midwest

The Fireside, North Liberty IA

Just returned from Easer Brunch at The Fireside, just relocated from Kalona IA. The owners have not enjoyed the traditional, buffet style brunch so instread went with a plated brunch. Their reasoning being that the food would be served in such a manner that it would be warm and fresh. The menu was extremely confusing, so much so the wait staff were making mistakes all over the place. One of the owners stopped by and explained it to us, it was to be styled as a traditional 4 course meal, in intervals, starting with salad, moving on to breakfast items, then meat and potatoes entree and finally dessert. Well, we never got salad and wasn't even asked about it. One of the breakfast selections consisted of Eggs OR bacon OR Sausage - sorry folks, no meat with the eggs here. Our food came basically all at once so we had more plates on the table than we had space for and the eggs came cold anyway. Not sure how the lamb and prime rib tasted as we just had it boxed to go and will eat it for dnner later. The french toast is NOT TO BE MISSED! FABULOUS. Will go back and try a meal there another time when there is not extra efforts being made for a holiday, but would advise skipping brunch there unless you're really hungry and want to eat in a big hurry.
