The Jib Room
I have driven past this place (on Oakland Park just west of Federal) several times, always wondering what was inside but never daring enough to walk in. Then about a week ago I saw a recommendation from on CH'er to another for a pre-show dinner and decided to check it out.
What a wonderful experience my husband and I had there! This restaurant is so clean (so much so that I would actually notice - wow this place is so clean!). Every staff member was so friendly and helpful. The decor was great, we were totally transported to a restaurant in the Caribbean.
There were several items on the menu that I wanted to try. We wound up ordering an appetizer special, tuna nachos, which were delicious. Generous portions of chopped raw tuna topped on fried wontons with. Awesome. I ordered my entree off the menu, seafood stew. Delicious. Clams, mussels, shrimp, scallop, fish and calamari in a tomato cilantro broth. The seafood was so fresh and tasty. My husband ordered a special entree -skirt steak with lobster mashed potatoes (who knew these even existed?) and steamed asparagus. Everything was so yummy that he even ate every bite of his asparagus. Oh, and they also served us a mini loaf of jalepeno corn bread with chipotle honey butter which was awesome.
Do yourself a favor and check this place out. There are also lots of great specials throughout the week (like an all you can eat pig roast the first sunday of every month!). A true hidden gem in Ft Lauderdale.
I think I was the one that suggested it. I'm typically more of a lurker, but I had to suggest it because it was so close to where freakerdude was attending the concert.
I had wanted to post a link to a review from a few years ago to give a little more backround about the place, but I wasn't sure if that was allowed. If you do a search for "browardpalmbeach.com" and "Jib Room" you will find it. It has actually evolved and gotten even better since then. The Sun Sentinel has also done a full review.
Gblscw, it actually is a bar, that would be totally fine on its own just being a bar, except it is also a tablecloth and candles restaurant. And, the restaurant would be great on its own without being a bar. (Mr. Mauslein is not really a wine drinker, so we tend to frequent places with a full bar.)
Unlike other "restaurant/bar" type places (think The Ale House or Flanigan's), they make a mean drink. If you order a martini, it's made with care, chilled glass, and full to the brim. The Jib Room is really in a whole different league, food atmosphere, and service-wise. I really recommend it.
