Results of 3/21-3/28 in Boston
Chowhounds...thanks for your advice regarding good eats in the Boston area.
I had posted regarding my college search trip with my student--we stayed in the Hyatt Regency at Downtown Crossing.
We loved Boston and the people. It was our first visit to Boston and it is a great city and the T makes getting around a snap!! Years ago, before DH and I were married--he was offered a few jobs there--but $ and the weather scared him off (he is a FL native). We ended up in Wash DC but I told him that after the kids are grown--I'd love to "retire" there...its a great city!
It was pretty cold and windy the first few days and then certainly got warmer--we had a bit of rain/clouds on Thurs but all in all the weather was very nice--just what the Chamber of Commerce would order!
As far as hotel--the night we arrived--our room was terrible. It was smokey and dirty. I called the front desk and because they were sold out that night--we had to make do --The next day the mgrs moved us to the 21st floor--we had a lovely room which was very clean and had a view of the river. It is a great location for people using the T--I will definitely stay again.
Because of the bad room--the concierge arranged for the brunch on Sunday for us--complimentary. Other than that--we didn't end up doing breakfast out....I had a box of instant oatmeal and my teen was happy with that and coffee before each days itinerary. The hotel brunch was good--typical of hotel brunches....Not gourmet--but very predictable and reliable.
SUNDAYwe had a late lunch from the Restaurant menu at KINGFISHER HALL. My son had the chowder, skirt steak and Boston Cream pie. The chowder was excellent, as was the steak entree...but he was very disappointed in the Boston cream pie.
I had the oysters app, the mahi mahi and the BC pie. The oysters were fine--though my son's chowder was the better choice for the app. The mahi mahi was great, tender and not over cooked. I am a big seafood eater and would have sent the fish back had it arrived overdone. The dessert--as I said, a disappointment. We sat upstairs and it was about 2:30/3pm...we got out of there for $51.55...the place was hopping...
On Monday, we had lunch at the BU cafeteria after the tour---
but we then tried to get into Neptune Oyster for dinner----and the concierge called ahead. The woman was supposed to hold a table for us--but it was PACKED--so we sadly missed out there---she wanted us to wait but it was crowded, hot and there was nowhere to stand.......
however MON NIGHTwe did eat at a place in the north end--my receipt says TRATTORIA IL PANINO but I dont know if that was it--or if this is the name of the business and the restaurant is one of a group. The place looks small and they have a side garden which had overhead heaters running...The food was amazing we had a large bresola/arugla/parm app and I had an amazing special--a huge dish of seafood, 1 small lobster, mussels, clams, a large piece of fish etc--all cooked with a wine/cherry tom sauce. It was very abundant. My sonn had a pasta dish which he thoroughly enjoyed--but what stands out for me was the HUGE excellent seafood meal...we got out of there for $87.40..plus we got to pratice our Italian.
Between Holy Cross and BC--we ate fast food on the road---
so that night we ate at ADDIS RED SEA. It was ok--but disappointing. The service was horribly slow. The injera is not made with teft flour---it was a white sourdough--and too thick -a bit gummy instead of tender. The watts, tibbs etc were not uniquely seasoned enough to really stand out from each other.... while it was ok/good food--It was definitley not as good as some of the Wash DC places but was a change of pace and my son enjoyed the experience.
Wednesday we were in Hanover to look at Dartmouth---If you are in Hanvover--have a burger at Lou's. Its the place locals will send you too--and the burgers are great. They also made us a frappe late in the day when we came by---we didn't realize they were closed and finising up for the afternoon--but rather than send us to someplace else--they fixed us two great shakes while we waited for the coach to take us back to Boston.
WED night--we did KAZE SHABU SHABU. This was our first Shabu experience. We had fun--but hated coming out of there smelling of food!! I wish places like that had better ventilation...The meats/veggies came on platters well chilled/sliced and the broths came to temp very quicly. We got out of there for $40.15 and although we had fun and my son would have gone back--I didn't have access to a washing machine and didn't have a way to clean clothes...does that say it all?
THURS for lunch we ate at CAFEteria Boston on Newbury on the RW menu. The place was empty--we were the second table for the lunch service and when we left only one other table came in ...We did eat off the RW menu--but the price of the Pelligrino was high and the "quick bites" the server offered pushed our lunch tab to $69.59....
what I recall most is the HUGE plate of olives ---which was enough for about 6-8 people--I wish the server had said something about that--and the cheese plate was my son ordered was skimpy...so I'd steer clear of those quick bites...
My chicken milanese was fine....son's pasta unmemorable ....but the molten choc cake was worth every calorie.
THUR night we ate at KENNEDY"S on Province. The sirloin strip steaks were fine but not equally trimmed. The meal was no better than a chain like a Ruby Tuesdays....so that was disappointing since it was supposed to be a part paino bar/part pub with sophisticated atmosphere etc...We were out of there for $68.42----2 steak meals, 1 glass red wine, 2 cheesecakes....
Friday--we were in Cambridge and had burgers at that place famous for their burgers--Locals help me here (my son recalls the name but he's not here right now)...The burgers were great--(named crazy things--lots of fun)
....but I was glad to have cash on hand--as they take no credit cards....how embarassing would that have been!!!
Also--there is no public rest room!!!!!!
HOW can a resturant not have a rest room? we wanted to wash our hands and there was no where to go!
How does that pass codes/inspections in the state?
FRI we had an amazing sushi meal at GINZA. We sat at the bar and my son ordered a sushi meal off the menu. I wanted a sushi/sashimi meal--for one--which doesn't exist on the menu. The chef agreed---and we agreed to a price--For about $38 I had one of the best sushi/sashimi meals ever...Absolutely gorgeous prep--I hated to eat it...it was abundant and gorgeous!!! and very very fresh!!!.
also--they had a special app--these tiny amazing oysters from Japan...$15 for the 4--they were wonderful and my son (who doesn't like raw oysters) loved these. They were so flavourful...At almost $4 a piece they SHOULD be ...LOL... ;o)
Meal, sake , tip --we dropped $92.65. A bit of sticker shock but it was a great meal.
Hope that helps someone else--Thanks for everyone's input. I have kept mmy notes/and even referrals from waiters to other restaurants etc and when we are back next year will maybe check some out...
