New restaurant in Montebello
Periodically people ask for recommendations for places to eat in the Montebello/East L.A. area which is not known for their "chow appeal." Today we tried a restaurant that opened last October. It is called Crabby's. They feature seafood on their menu but also have steaks, pasta etc. Their menu is limited in the amount of dishes offered. The decor was festive and welcoming and the service was excellent. They start you off with a latin version of bruchetta serving you a small platter of grilled baquette slices with a warm tomato salsa topping. It had a nice spice to it and the warmness added much to the flavor. Then we were served a small cup of soup that was nice and hot and very tasty. I guessed it was a crab/corn soup (should have asked.) I ordered the garlic shrimp and my BH ordered the special of the day, filete ranchero. My shrimp were grilled well. They were served on a bed of fluffy white rice with some mixed veggies and a nice cold crisp chopped salad that included tomatoes, cucumbers and red onions. It was nice compared to the usual limp lettuce salads you usually get at neighborhood restaurants. The filete ranchero was a grilled fish with a very spicy nice ranchero sauce on top. This order also came with the rice and salad. They had a nice selection of different kinds of crab, clams, mussels, prawns, all prepared in a couple of different ways. They also offered the crab pot which consisted of crab, shrimp, sausage, boiled potatoes and corn. We found the price to be reasonable for seafood. To some, this may not be a destination place but if you're hungry and in the area I say give it a try.
