FINALLY! Great Mexican in Fairfax

Meg Apr 9, 2009 04:58 PM

Just tried El Tio for the first time tonight. On Rt. 29 a block up from Myanmar and near German Gourmet. Wow is it good. Finally a mom and pop mexican joint. Had the tacos al carbon (fabulous marinade, juicy, tender huge chunks of beef) and the shredded beef and cheese enchiladas. Enchiladas were excellent but the al carbon really stood out. Terrific. light chips and fresh salsa with a slight kick. $2.00 Dos Equis drafts (happy hour) to boot.

Chatted with the owner. They've only been open two months. Sat at the bar but the restaurant is very good sized with nice decor. Not a dive by any means. Nice place for a family dinner.

PLEASE patronize this place. We can't let them go under like every other restaurant in the past 5 years that inhabited this spot!

I will make it a point to try it very soon. Good or great Mexican is nearly non-existent in NoVa.

You might have more success at drumming up business if you refer to it as being in Falls Church, rather than Fairfax, as Lee Highway east of Merrifield is more commonly thought of as Falls Church (not the city, but a general area). Along the same lines, a block up from Myanmar is really not near German Gourmet--those two establishments are a couple of miles apart, at least. If someone went looking near the German Gourmet without really knowing where Myanmar is, he or she would probably never find it. Thanks for the lead, in any event!

SoxFan, you're right. Deifnitely Falls Church. I was thinking FFX County. Though It's all relative, considering we drove to Springfiled last weekend to satiate a mex craving. Tried El Paso. Just so so, but it hit the spot.

It's a tex-mex joint, so not authentic mexcian. I'm just happy it's high quality.

Doesn't look very Mexican to me. If you're looking for good tripe soup and tongue tacos, this is a place I go to when I'm in the neighborhood:

        El Sabor De Mi Tierra
        46839 Maple Leaf Pl
        Sterling, VA 20164

Everything is cooked to order so it takes a little longer to get your food.

sterling is in the neighborhood? you've got a large worldview. ;-).

plus, to be fair, the restaurant calls itself tex-mex.

That might be the one next to the used car lot that was a pretty good Indian restaurant up until a couple of years ago. I think it was a different Mexican/Hispanic place after the Indian one.

Call me out of touch, but the lunch prices look pretty steep to me, particularly for what's usually pretty inexpensive food. Maybe they're really nearly dinner sized portions, too much for me.

I agree. I looked at their lunch prices and was a bit suprised that they were only a dollar or two less than the dinner prices. Though their dinner portions were very generous (enough for lunch today) so I suspect their lunch portions are as well.
