Best Japanese Tofu in NYC?

Does anyone know where I can find Naminori Johnny tofu in NYC? It's a Japanese brand, aka Surfer Johnny, and I have heard some Japanese grocery stores stock it but it sells out within hours of being put out! Alternatively, I'm also looking for Otokomae Tofu or comparable suggestions.

I've had homemade tofu at Kyoto-fu (divine lightness and texture) but have yet to find other restaurants that compare. Any recommendations?

Thank you!

  1. En has homemade tofu and I also remember having it at Sakagura a long time ago, not sure if they still have it.

    1. I think Sunrise Mart in East Village carries Otokomae Tofu. Naminori Johnny tofu sounds vaguely familiar but I'm not 100% sure if they carry it there or not.

The handmade tofu at EN Japanese Brasserie is delicious, if not particularly remarkable. Try to get it fresh, as soon as they make it (they list the times on their website).

      1. I have bought it at sunrise in the past but I havent seen it there the last 2 visits. Mitsuwa definitely carries it so I would try their JasMart stores.

All of the places that Ricky mentioned indeed carry the tofu that you want.
