El Tonayense - torta al pastor (and other places)
I had a torta al pastor from El Tonayense today and have to say, it's a great sandwich and at $5 bucks, very reasonable. Last year I thought it was one of the better sandwiches I've had and this reconfirmed things today.
The al pastor is nicely seasoned, dry (as opposed to runny), grilled onions peppers, beans (optional) and topped with salsa and lettuce and tomato if you want it. They use a nice (Francisican?) french roll that's toasted and crusty. The tortas vary slightly from the truck at Best Buy and 19th and Harrison but both are great.
Any rec's on other tortas in SF or the East Bay? These seem to be a little harder to find then tacos.

The torta al pastor at El Farolito (either next to 24th St BART or on 24th/Alabama) is still my favorite.
The tortas at the El Ojo de Agua truck on Fruitvale below International are massive and popular.

I sadly did not have enough tummy real estate to try them, and I know it's dangerous to judge food by looks alone, but from watching the boys at La Torta Gorda put together more than a dozen of these babies while we were eating at the counter in March, I'd sure give them a try...

Thanks, I'll have to try those. Los Picudos in San Pablo sounds interesting since it's San Pablo. I've been to Los Cantaros and had tacos but never tortas. They also have a new location in Emeryville at space that Kilohana use to be at.

I absolutely love the torta de chorizo con pappas from Los Cantaros. Their other tortas there are good too. In fact, I haven't had anything I did not like from Los Cantaros -- the one at the linked location. I have not tried their other locations.
My friend swears by Tortas Los Picudos, but I've had hits and misses -- it has a big menu. Worth exploring, though.
