Best Hangover Food

Sometimes I almost enjoy a hangover, because it gives me an excuse to eat the junkiest food in the world. My top picks are

1) MCDONALDS--You can't beat it. #2, (two cheeseburger meal) w/o cheese, extra onions, pickles, ketchup and mustard, with a Coke.

2) PIZZA HUT--Medium cheese pan pizza, extra sauce, twenty piece boneless buffalo nuggets, mild.

3) CARLS JR--5 piece chicken strips with honey mustard and BBQ for dipping, fried zucchini, with ranch dressing

4) PANDA EXPRESS--Orange chicken, chow mein, veggie spring rolls and cream cheese rangoons (no crab)

5) ASTRO-BURGER--Garden delight (veggie burger) no cheese, extra thousand island, small onion ring, ranch for dipping, and a cherry coke.

All of this eaten in bed, watching some really trashy TV. YAY! Best day ever.

Re your # 1: Yes!!!!! With some red chile and a fried egg on top!

          1. re: mrbigshotno.1

I love the pho, spicy starchy warm. Also Indian place lunch buffett, the only buffet I'll consider.

            1. re: mrbigshotno.1

pho really is the best hangover food.... It seriously cures whatever ails you.

btw, I accidentally typed "ales" you first, talk about having a one track mind, lol

            2. ANY truck stop breakfast.

              1. Diner breakfast of up eggs, bacon or sausage, rye toast and hashbrowns w/ onions, peppers and ketchup. My friends fondly refer to this as a "gut plug" - the meal to cure a hangover. If this isn't available a cheeseburger, fries anda diet coke come in a close second. Works everytime.

                1. pizza or a bacon sandwich.

                  1. RE #1) I think MacD discontinued the two cheeseburger meal years ago.

Been quite awhile since you tied one one?

I just had one about six weeks ago.

                    2. I got very sick/hungover once on Portuguese Brandy. The only thing that cured it was a handful of cyanide pills. :-)

That's hilarious. Since cyanide is so hard to come by nowadays, I think a greasy breakfast, sausage and hashbrowns necessary, accompanied by or followed up with the hair of the dog.

Actually, I just threw out about 1/2 lb of the stuff. Safely, of course. I was using it in a solution with silver nitrate to silverplate my homemade fishing lures. Hung around the house for a couple of years. Kinda scary stuff.

                      2. A beer. Also a chorizo burrito with cheese and onions and salsa roja.

A big greasy burrito made with chorizo, eggs and cheese. I also have to go with menudo with lots of Mexican oregano, fresh squeezed lime and diced onions.

                          2. Totally with you Beach Chick, on both the <a href="http://makingitwithmeleyna.com/?p=25&... N Out</a> and the JIB tacos.
                            Mexican food
Pretty much anything greasy and carb-loaded. Oh, and a huge Diet Coke is essential.

                            1. Pork fried rice, hands down no question. Naturally it is all in my head, but it feels like the oils coat my stomach and the rice absorbs all the toxins. Course if the toxins were still in my stomach, I wouldn't have the hangover.

In reality, just drink as much water as you possibly can. May not give you a warm fuzzy feeling like something fatty, but over a little bit of time, nothing is gonna actually help as much.

or the fried rice and a gallon of water before passing out - no hangover when you wake up. though you may be uneasy in the morning...

                              2. Pork roll, egg & cheese on a hard roll - SnP and 'chup.

Bloody Mary and/or VERY COLD Beer!

Herring w/ corn rye bread or a hunk of kolbasa w/ horseradish (w/ icy shot of vodka).

mmmm that sounds great! nothing better than straight keilbasa with horseradish! clears those sinuses out and gets the saliva flowing.

And rereading that it sounds gross, but it really is actually great

That’s what hooked me. I remember doing that so well. Some of my best hangovers were spent reunited with the same DB’s from the night before watching the worst of the worst movies (Pauly Shore, derivative 80’s teen-sex comedies...) all the while piggishly indulging in fast food.

Now, I’m lucky to stay awake long enough to _get_ drunk! :-P

But, to answer your question, my go to hangover food has always been bacon and eggs.

                                  1. My go-to meal is some type of breakfast sandwich, a Pepsi and a Revive Vitamin Water. I figure with the grease, caffeine and electrolytes, I'm covering all the bases.

                                    1. Weisenberger-gorgonzola grits topped with parsley and lemon juice, with a side of sausage.

(The original was leftover short ribs plus, but in a pinch. . .)

                                      1. Step #1 -- take the aspirin BEFORE you go to bed.

Step #2 -- Bacon Sandwich - we now have scientific proof! :)

                                        Step #3, 4 & 5 -- Water, Water, Water...you're dehydrated big time.

Step #1 addendum - WITH a big bottle of water. Best hangover cure I've ever found is a 20-oz bottle of water before bed - no more, no less. That seems to be my magic number.

If I forget or can't be bothered (which seems to happen more frequently the older I get), any form of salty, greasy potato goodness is required the next day. If I can get to one, diner potatoes are the ideal. A bag of potato chips or an order of fries if I can't be bothered to find food until after noon or there's no diner in stumbling distance. And rehydrating with Diet Coke. For some reason, this is the only thing that can make me start to feel human again. A liter of Diet Coke later, I feel like myself.

                                          1. re: Wahooty

If I know I'm going out and there is a good possibility I will over indulge, the water bottle goes next to the bed BEFORE I leave the house. The chances of actually drinking it are much higher that way.

                                            1. re: KaimukiMan

Not only did my buddies and I make sure we all drank plenty of water before bed, we set an alarm for 4:30-5 am (depending on when we rolled in) to ensure we all got up to use the bathroom, and then drink another litre or so of water and take an aspirin. We might be tired the next morning, but our hangovers were minimal.

                                            2. re: Wahooty

I make mine Gatorade before bed, and some kind of salty food. Never had a hangover :)

                                            3. re: mcsheridan

To mcsheridan, please don't take aspirin while you still have alcohol in your system. You may cause stomach bleeding especially if you mix with things like Aleve or Tylenol. Just drink lots of water to limit the dehydration.

Personally, I like dim sum after drinking. It's delicious, oily, slow paced with lots of tea, and cheap.

                                            4. If we're ending the night with some hangover-prevention, then a big heaping plate of poutine (with an automatic defribulator on standby for the impending heart attack). If it's the morning after too much tequila, then a big fry up of eggs, bacon and toast.

For those of you who are wondering what poutine is - here's a pic of it in all its cheesy, gravy soaked glory ;)

                                                1. re: maplesugar

I agree with the poutine, but without cheese for me...a simple fry&gravy.
Also any kind of cheapo chinese food. Not the stuff from chinatown (which would work too), but from a place likely called Imperial Wong or Jade Dragon
(names I got from my handy chinese restaurant name generator, http://newmoanyeah.com/2004-features/...)
delivered from two towns over, with most likely a hairy italian cook.
Agree with pancake, a caesar helps get the edge off.
Another good one is a greasy pepperoni sub on extra fresh bread.

But of course, its all dependent on the severity of the hangover...you ever had one of those beer/wine/Jack/champagne hangovers where suicide seems to be a solid option?
Where just the thought of eating is painful?
For those (thankfully becoming a rare event) I can only stomach a weak beef broth (boiled marrow bones and beef rib) infused with tomato juice.

                                                2. Pho and mo pho, extra chili sauce, and maybe a poached egg on top.

                                                    2. McD's a must!
Fried squid (calmari), fried rice, Chinese style escargots in black bean sauce, Black Bean and peppers sauce with thick rice noodles and Cantonese Chow Mein also a must!!
A CAN of coke and a few cups of Jasmine tea on the side, please. :)

                                                        1. Head to the local deli. Purchase the following:

                                                          A quart of Tropicana OJ
An egg salad sandwich on a hard roll with black pepper and onions.

Works every time but the onions make you less than popular with neighboring people for a while.

                                                          1. Pork roll, egg and cheese on a hardroll.

                                                            1. Agree on McD's but for me it's a Filet o' Fish and Fries. On the fat grams per ounce of food scale, I believe the FOF is the worst thing on their menu but oh so good for a hangover.

                                                                1. re: Demented

Too much grease & salt just makes me feel sicker.

                                                                2. Sleep and maybe dream of Mickey Dees or Taco Bell but hopefully NOT and not wake up for a long time :)

Also had a good experience with a nice big bowl of black bean soup which cured a hangover that wouldn't otherwise budge. I deluded myself that it was because my body needed B vitamins and iron...

To kill it, I consumed about 1/4th of a sync Vitaminwater, which was soon evacuted from it's place of rest. I then drove around, first picking up a Southwest black bean and corn grilled chicken salad from Chik-Fil-A, a large macaroni and cheese and ten not hot wings from kfc. I then made one more stop at Mickey D's for a large cup of tea. after consuming half of what I'd purchased and sleeping it off for about 5 hours, I feel so much better!!

Spoon it over rice.). Some years ago, I had a wicked hangover after a soju-soaked birthday celebration but managed to get up at 7am to prepare the chigae to the amazement of my roommate. Ya got to sweat out the toxins/residual alcohol and chigae does the trick!

                                                                                      3. Deep-fried clam or lobster sandwiches... the New England kind with horseradish mayo on a toasted roll. And French fries.

Although I had a headache just go away after a great plate of smoked salmon, capers, raw onions, tomatoes, and delicious cream cheese alongside a toasted sesame bagel.

                                                                                        1. I know how to get a hangover...

                                                                                            1. Sunny side up eggs on top of some really good corned beef hash

                                                                                              1. I can't believe I didn't think of this the first time I read this thread, but I have two friends who are brothers/Mexican/bartenders. One evening after they had a particularly hard night the night before, I saw them eating something behind the bar and asked them what it was. They said it was the best Mexican hangover cure they knew of... fresh cucumbers, peeled and cut into chunks and then heavily doused with your hotsauce of choice. One taste and I was hooked - and they were so right about it being a great hangover cure.

                                                                                                  1. One of these usually does the trick for me:
McD's fries, a jumbo coke( I usually get 2, drink one w/fries and put the other in the freezer to get slushy)

rice water to settle the stomach and 2 Aleve

Because they definitely have the best Diet Coke. It actually annoys me how much better it tastes there, and I have tried every iteration of diet soda known to man.

                                                                                                    2. A salute to those who can bear to put solid food in their stomach DURING a hangover. I don't get hangover headaches, but my body seems to overcompensate by tripling up on the nausea. Lukewarm tap water is about the heartiest thing I can ingest on those regretful mornings.

Now for post-hangover hunger, a Frisco Melt from Steak 'n Shake cannot be beaten. For you non-midwesterners, a Frisco Melt is two crispy-thin beef patties, with american cheese melted between them, drenched in thousand island dressing, and enfolded in two slices of cheap bread. The outsides are coated with what I presume is some kind of butter substitute and the whole thing is crisped up on a griddle. When eaten sober it makes me want to scrape the grease off my forehead with a credit card. When eaten post-hungover it's like Dorothy using the oil can on the Tin Man.

                                                                                                      1. chicken burrito, extra hot sauce, guac and an icy coke
