My mom and sister are coming to visit NY for my 20th Birthday on Thursday. I would love to celebrate with them and my BFF's at a really trendy place (atmosphere like Buddakan, Stanton Social, Alta, etc.) The only problem is that I am a really picky eater and wont eat most of whats on their menus (I know its horrible). Ill eat American food, Italian, Mexican, and a few other safe bets like that. We ate at Rosa Mexicana and Dos Cominos before so I want to get away from the chain thing and go somewhere more exclusively New York!! Can anyone help?? Thanks!

Do you like steak? Do you like french fries? Steak frites = Balthazar or Pastis. Always fun for a birthday and very 'New York'

Sounds like a good thought to me. JCG, have a look at their menus and see what you think. Keep in mind, too, that Pastis serves excellent cocktails (I've never had cocktails at Balthazar because I've been there only for brunch and don't drink alcohol at brunch).

      How about Momofuku Ssam Bar?

I would never send a picky eater to Ssam Bar.

        Try Lupa

Lupa might work but depends on if the OP is looking for more Italian-American or not.

Thanks for the responses...I found this place called Vento in the Meatpacking District. Have you ever been there?

I haven't been, but it looks like a good choice - there's definitely something on the menu for everybody, and the space looks pretty cool. I'll keep my fingers crossed
for you that the weather's warm enough for sitting on that awesome looking patio!!

BTW, just kidding about Ssam Bar - most definitely not for unadventurous eaters! ;)

I've been to Vento. While the space is nice, I wasn't blown away by the food.
You could try La Esquina (I've not been, but I know of friends who have had their bday dinners there). Also, I think Freeman's would be a good bet.

Could you give us some specifics on what you like or dislike? American, Italian, and Mexican food is still pretty broad.

It's a totally different vibe from Budakkan and Stanton Social (meatpacking is more big and impressive), but it is a pretty popular/trendy place right now: Redhead, in E Village. It may be too casual for your liking.
Bar Americain is up in midtown (Bobby Flay restaurant)
What about a steakhouse? There are a couple that are pretty trendy right now, like Striphouse and Rare.
A few more guidelines, as suggested by others, may help. Many of the expansive, trendy places do tend to have at least a bit of ethnic influence.

Redhead might be nice, especially if you get a booth. I think they only take reservations for large parties early on in the evening, though.

How about Vento in Meatpacking? It's good food (not great), and will have some definate safe bets, plus the scene is on the trendy side...
