Fricano's Deli (campus area)

Fricano's is a little deli on E. 31st near Speedway, just north of campus. They have hot and cold sandwiches, hot dogs, salads, and homemade deserts. It's a small hole-in-the-wall, maybe 4 or 5 tables plus counter seating.

The staff is friendly and the sandwiches are great. They use fresh ingredients (unlike some other places - if you're going to put a tomato the color and taste of a pencil eraser on my sandwich, don't bother). They have a variety of house-made sauces and spreads to add, whether you order off the specialty menu or make your own. The Rocket Sauce is a tangy mayostard (or mustardayonnaise, if you prefer) concoction. The Garlic Herb Roast Beef has a Boursin-type cheese spread that melts on the grill. And they are quite sizeable, made on big slices of what I think is bread from Texas French Bread.

They also offer catering and delivery. I really like this place, and put it up with the Little Deli and Hog Island as one of my favorite sandwiches in town.

  1. went there today, it was pretty good. the garlic herb roast beef seemed to be highly recommended so thats what i got. it was definitely good. there was a very chill vibe there, probably because its away from the hustle and bustle of campus. plus they got a picture of biggie up there, props on that. ill definitely be checking out more of the menu there in the future.

    1. My previous favorite was the Little Deli but Fricanos takes the top spot now. Went there for lunch with three friends. Great sandwiches, very friendly people but limited seating. A neat place!

      1. Really enjoy this place - great sandwiches, fun quirky atmosphere, and ownership/management make it clear that they appreciate your business. Along with Avenue B Grocery and Foodhead, easily among the best sandwich shops in town.

          Went there about three weeks ago and again last week and kept meaning to write a huge "WOW!" review and never got around to it. Now, Chronicle put out the article and I guess it's no longer "our little secret" which is a pity because now I fear they'll be too many people to get a quick and/or quality sandwich till it cools down a bit....I hope.

          Long story-short this place is amazing and the sammiches are really really special. The Johana is now my fav. Garlic herb cheese roast beef is good, but not worth the drive good.

          Anyway, give it some time to cool down and then do yourself a favor and go get the Johana.

            I don't know what took me so long to get to Fricano's, but I had my "WOW!" today. Every ingredient was the best it could be. And it takes a lot for me to get excited about a sandwich. I had The Brandi and subbed the garlic mayo for the dressing it came with. It was a sandwich worth posting about.

            The bread is amazing. I asked, and it comes from the Panaderia Chuy guy. Also loved the chocolate chip cookies. Very homemade tasting and loaded with chocolate chips.
