Shaffer City

Had 2 dozen oysters at Jay's Shaffer Oyster bar Friday night. Even in these tough economic times, they won't serve Pacific oysters from areas affected by the damn "red tide" (if you don't know it's bacteria which is worse and often more pervasive and insidious than Communism). Jay is committed to serving only pristine, expertly shucked oysters. Still the best variety in Manhattan. Highly recommmended.

and by this, you think he's the savviest buyer in town?

            i didn't say that.

if i only patronized the savviest restauranteurs in town, i'd eat at luger, yasuda and masa....then go find a place to live in maine between meals.

            :)

a dozen oysters at the bar at shaffer's is pretty good. vodka gimlets, straight up, seem to fit right in.

sometimes, the "savviest" (how lame, did I just quote myself) "buyers" are found in the least expected venues.
                steak ... yes. sushi ...

                  of course.

i don't even necessarily think shaffer is the best oyster place in town...i'm not enough of an aficionado to make that judgment. sometimes, the grand central oyster bar hits it. sometimes aquagrill. i do like shaffer though. always quite good.

grand central oyster bar is good for pan roasts. that's about it.

for oysters in manhattan, shaffer is pretty good.

timing, turn-over and a passionate buyer ... and you're gold.
