Richard Jones BBQ on South Congress

Yesterday I was running errands around Congress and Oltorf, was feeling peckish, and was chagrined to see that Red Cap was closed (heard their fried chicken is great). Decided to try RJ BBQ--never been there before. This place is kinda old school BBQ--not really in a good way IMHO. They bring you a lot of food--easily twice what I can eat. The cornbread was decent, the brisket tasted good, but was pretty dry. The BBQ sauce totally generic, and the sausage utterly forgettable. I'd call it, on the whole, a mediocre experience. Very nice people, and fascinating old school charm. But in a place where there's tons of good BBQ joints, and a number of great ones, this place ain't in the running.

I think their breakfast is a lot better than their BBQ. It's in the style of the breakfast you get at Frans/Dans, great hash browns, biscuits & gravy.

I remember that they had a great deal on Steak and Eggs.

Thanks for taking one for the team. I've been tempted for years.
