I just read the following article:

and I was wondering if anyone knew of other such bargoons?

Thanks, fmed -- not exactly a find though as I am on their mailing list. I quite like the articles generally but thought this one was especially topical and might be of use to in and out of town 'Hounds looking for even better than usual Vancouver food value :-).

The list is focused on upscale-ish restaurants that are reacting to the recession. Hopefully, these deals stick around when the economy picks up.

Some amazing deals there...$2 dishes at Zin, the $20 3-with-3 at Mon Bella (that sounds intriguing actually). I note the absence of Market, and the prix fixe at Chow.

Thanks for that grayelf, I really have to try that fried chicken at Fuel some time!

fmed, Market really does do a bargain at lunch with the $28 menu - you can't beat it for value really...

I just read in this morning's Vancouver Sun that Yew at the Four Seasons is offering a 3 course, asian-inspired meal for $35.

Let me know if you ever want to hit Fuel on a Friday (missed my chance with Cancuk yesterday, doh), ck, as it's on my list too and it's near work...

Chow restaurant is shuttering after tonight's service. Too bad. That place was fantastic. The prix fixe was one of the best deals in the city.

Very sad for sure, fmed -- I had a birthday dinner there that was quite memorable ;-).

Bistrot Bistro has had that deal for a long time if not the whole time they have been around...

But it's still good to get it out there.

Not sure if I should be posting this as it pertains to a sort-of chain (part of the Browns group) but a deal's a deal: Pinky's on 4th has 1/2 off all food on Mondays (they open at 5). Their menu looks a bit "CFD" for me but the price sure sounds right. They also have a "wine bailout" program going on where they appear to have slashed prices for their bottles pretty significantly...

From SF Bay Area CVhound: Kingyo offers a special tasting menu from 5:30 to 6:30pm Monday through Thursday. Cost is $25pp and the matching sake pairing with 3 sakes is an add'l $20.

The card shows the following: appetizer trio of seared scallop with fresh salsa and edamame sauce, deep fried prawn and jasmine tea leaves and cheese potato croquette with home made tomato sauce. Salad course is boiled sesame chicken salad. Main is albacore tuna steak with 3 kind of Japanese pepper sauces or stone grilled duck breast with lemon sesame salt sauce and Korean-style BBQ sauce. Dessert choices include house-made chestnut gelato or house-made yuzi gelato.

Sakes include "You's time," "Kingyo Junmai" and "Bizen Omachi Junmai Daiminjo."

Here's another one from one of our local "chains" (sort of!) -- from the Salt email newsletter (this sounds good enough to make me forgive Judas Goat... almost):

The Irish Heather Announces Dinner & A Pint For $12!

By partnering with their beer suppliers and digging into Chef Lee Humphries treasure trove of recipes, the team at our brother operation, The Irish Heather GastroPub, are offering a series of value driven meals on their 40ft "long table".

Each dinner includes a pint of beer & a plate of food for $12 plus tax and service charge. Look for Roast Suckling Pig with Kronenberg Lager, Pan Roasted Skate with R&B Red Devil Ale, Braised Lamb Cheeks with a Pint of Guinness, etc.

I went to Jules Bistro in gastown yesterday for dinner and they were offering a prix fixe menu for $22 which included mixed greens, steak or salmon frites, and chocolate terrine. I thought that was an excellent deal. I didn't have it but will def go back and give it a try.
