2 days, 2 nights

so my brother-in-law and wife are visiting my wife and I. thinking Jean Georges for 1 lunch, Aburiya Kinnosuke for 1 dinner and Lugers for lunch also. Trying to think of a good italian place. loved A Voce before Carmellini left and haven't been back since. Tired of Babbo, never overly impressed with Del Posto. Any ideas? open to any other suggestions for newer places that have opened in the last few months as i haven't ventured out much lately...

Scarpetta is definitely a good choice, but if you want a more extensive menu with lots of organ meats and game, try Convivio. At $59 for a four course prix-fixe, it is quite a bargain.

Convivio's excellent too. I had the prix-fixe and concentrated on pasta dishes. Really, really good stuff. And the foie gras crostini appetizer is delicious.

I too loved Convivio's foie gras crostini appetizer - WOW! Very good. However I did think Convivio was a "tad" stuffy. I also agree Scarpetta is better than Convivio. What a great space and the food and service was perfect. I had the duck and foie gras ravioli in the marsala reduction and it was heavenly.

Lugers is overrated garbage. Stay away from there unless you like tasteless steak, horrible sides, boring dessert and the rudest service on earth.

For Italian, I'd give Scarpetta a shot. We went last weekend and LOVED it. Excellent food and top flight attentive service. Lupa is good, but I think Scarpetta blows it out of the water.

scarpetta's a good idea. thanks. convivio as well, although we haven't been. in its previous life as l'impero (i think), it was kind of stuffy, is it still the same atmosphere?

with respect to lugers...i love the steak and bacon. dessert is a throwaway, so agree there. and the service...some people can't stand it, others get a kick out of the "new york" thing and for me, it's a non-factor, as i tend to not really care about the service aspect of the dining experiance.

Convivio is not at all stuffy. Having been there when it was L'Impero, I can understand your hesitation, but it is now more casual.

Fatty, Convivio wasn't stuffy at all. Very relaxed. And the service that we received was excellent even though that's not a big factor for you.

As for Lugers, I don't normally mind indifferent service. But when it crosses the line to rude where the guy basically tosses your food on the table and is nasty and scowling that is unacceptable. Some might like being tossed around like a schmoe and consider it a NY thing. I've had better service in NYC than anywhere else in the country, so I think it's more of a Luger thing than a NY thing.

you're probably right, in that out of towners get a kick out of the gruff service. personally, i could do without, but i won't let it get in my way of hte bacon and steak. turns out we're losing a dinner, so looks like convivio will just be me and my wife... based on the reviews andthe boards, it sounds like my brother in laws loss.
