I don't live in DC but I often buy almond paste in my regular grocery store-it is found in the baking aisle near the cake fillings (usually also near the chocolate chips and nuts).

Rodman's on Wisconsin has it in the baking goods section-- Odense brand in the tubes and one brand in a can. Rodman's is a couple of blocks south of the Friendship Heights station Jenifer street exit. They may also have pastry bags in the housewares downstairs.

Careful, there are two kinds of almond paste by Odesse -- one that is what I think you want and one that's marzipan. (Yummy but not usually for baking.) I also have been able to find my almond paste in a regular supermarket.

You can buy it at Whole Foods on P street.

The best place to find pastry bags is a craft store, like Michaels. (In their cake decorating section.) Marzipan can be touch and go. I've found tubes of it at some Giant Food stores and none at gourmet shops. If you don't need it right away, you may want to buy it online. (It's cheaper that way.)
