Indian Dessert -- Basundi?

Does anyone know where to find an Indian dessert called basundi? It's a milky, kind of soupy dessert with slivered almonds.

You're probably referring to Basudi. Very similar is Dood (milk) Pak which also has rice in it. Your best bet will be to check out the Indian places in Jackson Heights. Ask around for the Gujarati establishments.

Thanks waylook. As far as I can tell, it's definitely basundi (that's how my boyfriend and his family say it and a bunch of recipe results came up when I typed it in.), but perhaps I'll venture to Jackson Heights and try my luck. I've been meaning to go there to explore anyway. Thanks again!

It's definitely "basundi" in the general Bombay area, but it may be called something else in other regions. I think there are sweet shops in Jackson Heights that carry it, but I am not sure. You can also try Sukhadias in midtown Manhattan (and other locations), or call the restaurant Vatan (3rd ave around 30th). It's easy enough to make, though: boil milk down in a heavy bottomed pan till reduced to about 1/2, add sugar, and saffron threads and simmer for another 5 minutes, then add freshly crushed cardamom and take off the heat. Garnish with slivered nuts (almonds, pistachios), or for a truly authentic taste, a small crunchy seed called "charoli" (hard to get in the U.S. in non-rancid form).
