Monterey - Fisherman's Wharf, Cannery Row

Since I am chaperoning a school trip, I have no option to drive myself anywhere I want to eat so we are limited to where we take the kids. Are there any non-chain, non-tacky tourist traps to save me? Also, for breakfast, we are staying at the Portola Plaza & I will be able to sneak away for some meals as long as it is within walking distance. Any nearby options? I am always a fan of local favorites.

  1. Try the Sand Bar 'n Grill on the commercial wharf.

    1. Loulou's Griddle on the Middle has very good breakfast. It's a small place on the Commercial Wharf, easily within walking distance.

I had a nice meal at the Mucky Duck, I think that's the name, about 4 years ago. It's a pub atmosphere, on the block that runs into the more "touristy" wharf (I forget the name the street). I will also be at there (at the hotel at the end of the wharf) this Sunday and will probably walk that street for a dinner spot. Lots to choose from.

On the Wharf itself, it you must go there, I've had nice meals (and always good service) at Old Fisherman's Grotto. It's on the left side as you walk down the wharf.

      1. I second the Sandbar and Grill. Always wonderful. Be sure to leave room for their chocolate dessert. If you can't find it, ask a local where Wharf #2 is. It's down some stairs on the left side as you're walking out to sea.

Don't take the kids with you if you go to the Mucky Duck! It's got some great deals, (I think the entire menu is half price on either Wednesday or Thursday,) but it's a notorious pick up spot.

Mucky Duck is on Alvarado Street - and it's lined with restaurants, most of them pretty good.
