Goat in Philly?

LPhila Apr 1, 2009 09:39 AM

I just read this article on NYTimes.com...

I've never had goat and it got me wondering if anyone knows if there are any Philly restaurants, lunch trucks, taquerias, whatever, that serve goat that is really delicious.

the jamaican food truck by the community college on 17th b/w spring garden and callowhill has curry goat. haven't had it yet but like everything else i've had there.

also, i had a ridiculously good goat special at south philly tap room which hopefully gets on the menu: goat empanadas over a salad of arugula, cherry tomatoes and goat cheese ranch.

I just had a kid goat curry at Standard Tap last week. Not bad.

Calypso in Chestnut Hill Farmer's Market serves a curry goat that I had this past weekend. As I go in search for all things Trinidadian, I stumbled on this place which just opened!! It was delicious. Served with a roti and curried potato and channa. Yummmm.

Try the goat curry at Sitar India on 38th Street just north of Market. It's usually on the buffet which is $10.95 for dinner.

They also serve beer for $2.75 -- even cheaper at happy hour!

Thanks for all the ideas... I guess i haven't really been looking hard enough! I've been meaning to get to Kanella at some point, and the taquerias sound like great quick drop-by spots too.

Both Cantina los Caballitos in South Philly and Cantina Dos Segundos in Northern Liberties have goat available as an entree or as tacos, and their version is delicious. La Lupe in South philly often has it, but I didn't much care for it. A lot of the taquerias serve it, especially on weekends, just walk around south philly, you'll find some.

Blackbird in Jersey often has it, Salento on Walnut Street has Goat ravioli, most Caribbean places, like the Jamacian Jerk Hut serve it. It's not actually that hard to find in Philly.

Los Taquitos de Puebla offers goat on the weekends.

I think Jamaican Jerk also serves a goat stew. I haven't been there in years so you'll need to look up the menu.

Me too - I know I've had it & liked it there, but I haven't been to that place in forever.

Not that I remember having it myself, but according to the menu... yes: http://jamaicanjerkhutinc.com/jerk_me... Curry goat & curry goat roti. My friend who's Jamaican *loves* the food there & the people are extremely nice... why do I not go more often? The website says they're opening another location soon, but not where!

Last weekend, I had a very good goat stew at Kanella. This weekend, I'm going to Blackbird in Collingswood and I see that goat is on the menu there. Years ago, I remember having goat at Vetri and I believe that it is still on the menu there.

not that it's affordable, but I did just have the goat at Vetri 2 weeks ago and it is still as good as always
