Try Heirloom at the Study Hotel, they've got nice "Amish" chicken dish. Right next to Yale campus. Also Union League Cafe has good French-style chicken, also right across street from Yale's Old Campus.

The company I work for has had several visiting clients stay there. It has become our automatic suggestion for anyone looking to stay in New Haven. These clients typically work in the properties development division of their company (the exceptions are executives), and all have been very impressed with the Study.
I still haven't tried the food, but the only negatives reviews I've heard have revealed a certain degree of cheapness. The vast majority of reviews, and all of those coming from sources I give any merit to, have been glowing.

Like mine? The food and service there is top-notch! Classy, kind of New York sophistication with hard edged interior. Nice bar, open to the dining area. Lots of glass at the street. Nice wood floors. Art. Nice jazz playing softly in the background.
Not like a lot of places in New Haven where you get to look at a lot of old bricks.
Private parking garage under hotel, too! No, it's not cheap, but it's not outrageous, either. (Think of it as the opposite end of the spectrum from my lunch at House of Chao, Monday: http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/5623...)
