Sat night dinner with three 70 year olds

Family are coming in from England and we're meeting up with friends on Saturday evening. There will be six of us - three of whom are in their early 70's. Looking for somewhere fairly quiet, where we won't be rushed, around the Union Square, East or West Village area. We're all on quite a tight budget, so I'm thinking around $50 a head. American or European cuisine.

I'm coming up blank, so your suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I took my parents to a couple of restaurants when I took them to NY a couple of years ago and I brought to a couple of places that would fit your needs. I brought them to Campanile on 29th between Madison and park avenue south. It is very good Italian where you can have a nice conversation without having to scream. We also went to Giorgio's of Gramercy, where we loved the food and it was comfortable and not rushed.

What about Knickerbocker Bar and Grill on 9th street and University? I used to live on the same block and every time I passed by, there would always be a crowd of local senior folks having a meal. On Saturdays at 9:45, there is a live jazz band which I know is not exactly quiet but it would be lovely, no? A little bit of live music...

Thank you both for your great suggestions. I made reservations at the Knickerbocker.
