I'm from New York City, where all but a few liquor stores do a poor job of importing the best Kentucky bourbon, and those that carry a bit of the best stuff charge way too much for it. Meaning a very special bottle will be, like, 25% more expensive in NY than in Chicago.

Anyway, I'm headed to Louisville for the Derby. This being my 17th Derby, I know my way around town, but I realize I don't know a great liquor store in town. One that carries the best bourbons. Sure, the Liquor Barn is fun, but really, they don't have the stuff I'm looking for--George T Stagg, for example. Or Thomas Handy Rye.

Please, Kentuckians, help me out here. What's the best store to go in Louisville for an amazing bourbon selection?

You might try Old Town Liquors on Bardstown Rd in the Highlands, they have a fantastic selection and a very knowledgeable staff.
I recommend you take a day trip to Bardstown, though, and stop into Toddy's Liquors! They are fantastic and very helpful! They carry over 100 brands of Bourbon and what they don't have they will order for you and shipping is available as well! At less than an hour from Louisville, this place is well worth the trip!

George T Stagg and Thomas Handy Rye are released in late Fall and are typically gone in a few weeks. I can't think of a liquor store that would have them now.

There is a chance, however, that Bourbon's Bistro on Frankfort Ave has them by the glass.

Thanks for the help on this. Just in case any one else finds this in the archives, some takeaways from my last visit:
-Echoing Yourname, Stagg and Handy are best found in Louisville stores in late Fall or thereabouts. The Seelbach bar was still lousy with the stuff, but Bourbon's Bistro was pretty disappointing this year, as they were well out of much of the limited edition type of bourbon. Food was good, as usual, though.
-Louisville is actually too much of a bourbon town for what I needed. I bought a bottle of Stagg about a mile from my parents' house in suburban Chicago at a Binny's, just a week before the Derby, and stashed it in in my luggage. Sam's Warehouse and Binny's (up North, not in KY) get their allotments and they actually last in the stores for a good 6 months or more. But in the great state of KY, the stuff vanishes as soon as it hits the shelves...

I definitely second Old Town Liquors. A friend of mine got her swanky-bourbon-loving boss a pretty great bottle there as a Christmas gift, and I recall a locked case filled with a really nice selection of bottles!
