I'm Looking for a spot for my girlfriends 30th. A quirky/fun/weird environment is key. We're looking at a total of 6 people for dinner. Not too expensive.

Musha! It is in Santa Monica and is so much fun. You can even try to reserve the private tatami room.

Musha has another place in the South Bay as well. The Musha in Torrance is a little bigger, brighter, and parking is relatively easy. Either place serves traditional, as well as more fusion-y types of izakaya dishes. Reservations are almost always required - especially on weekends.

I agree with the Musha rec. Regarding 2 of the places mentioned below, Furaibo and Honda-Ya, they have a fun atmosphere, but the food is miles behind.

Hey we were looking for the same thing and I think Musha fits the bill perfectly.

I'll respectfully disagree and urge the Shinsengumi yakitori locations, either Torrance or the SGV.

Try the tatami room at FuRaiBo on Sawtelle or the tatami room at Honda-Ya in Little Tokyo. Wear nice socks.

Honda-Ya in little tokyo is totally festive. They dim the lights and have a happy birthday recording come on the speakers. The food is not expensive and I loved it when I went.
