Tamarind juice on the UES?

bastet212 Mar 27, 2009 02:37 PM

I'm making (or attempting to make) Pad thai this weekend and I need tamarind juice. Ive already tried the asian market n 59th, the bridge market and both melange's.....to no avail. Has anyone seen tamarind juice in the area?

Try a Latin market..look for the Goya brand tamarind juice.

Do you need actual tamarind juice, or could you soak tamarind paste in hot water? That is what I usually use in Thai and Indian recipes. That said, I usually get the tamarind paste downtown.

Where are you on the UES? I'll try to think of a Latin market ....

Im around 70th and and 1st. The recipe i'm following calls for juice, but I can absolutely sub any tamarind product. I just dont have a lot of time to run around town tomorrow like i usually would :) Do you think grace's/gourmet garage/agatha&v would carry something?

I don't think Grace's would have it - haven't been to the other two in ages. Might be worth calling around a bit. Sorry not to be of more help!

I wonder if a large Food Emporium might carry it in their Lain aisle. You could also check the Mexican grocers further uptown..along 116th St, if you have the time.

Mexico Lindo on Second Avenue..212-410-4728 might be a place to call..
