NO this summer...
my family and i will be in NO in early august (i think that first weekend) - just curious to see if there were any festivals that were going on during that time or good farmers markets to check out ... i've read some of the posts on this board so am trying to figure out where to go eat and what not - but wanted to see if there was anything special happening around town during that time.
we will also be driving from NO to Orange Beach, Al so if yo know of any must stops inbetween id love to know about them.
we will have a car and probably staying near or in the french quarter.
thanks!

COOLinary New Orleans is scheme put together by the Visitor's Bureau together with many restaurants to attract customers during the slow time - they offer reasonably priced prix fixe menus during August and September: http://www.nomcvb.com/restaurants/index.cfm

Try to make it to White Linen Nights. Plenty of art, people watching, drinks, and food.

I would point you to our blog but we haven't filled the calendar all the way to August just yet!
That being said, check out the Times Picayune's nola.com for their list: http://blog.nola.com/festivals/2007/12/louisiana_area_festivals_for_a.html

If you're here for it, Midsummer Mardi Gras. Put on by the Krewe of O.A.K., this uptown second line parade takes to the streets in costume with brass bands and revelry. Generally it's the third or fourth saturday in August. Starts around 8pm at the Maple Leaf, and then people take to the streets marching, dancing, laughing and second line through the Carrollton neighborhood, making a couple stops at various watering holes along the way. This parade has been happening for over 20 years, and is certainly a local favorite. This parade was the last thing I did before evacuating for Katrina, and one of the best memories I have of New Orleans - one that I renew yearly. This past year I showed up to an empty event, except for a couple of die-hards due to evacuating for Gustav. Hope when you come to town there's no evacuating to do!

Every second Saturday there's an art walk in Bay St. Louis, MS. It's on Main Street from the beach toward town about 4 blocks long. All the shops are open, they all have free wine and snacks as well as local artists with their art on display. It starts around 5PM so if you get the chance to spend the night there I'm sure you'd have a good time.

we will be there the 1-3 of august so we will miss both of those festivals.... which is a bummer becuase they sound awesome.
also are there good brewerys down there that we should hit up - coming from Portland - land o the micro brew - we're always on the look out for some good beer!

We like Zea Rotisserie in Clearview mall in Metairie. Get the sampler platter. I believe you get five different beers. They have seasonal brews but I don't know what they will have when you're here. I like the green chilies beer and the chocolate coffee beer.
If you go to the Abita brewery in Abita Springs you can drink all the beer & root beer you like - free! Just bring a designated driver. ;) Don't eat at the Abita Cafe, it's awful.

Zea and Gordon Biersch (both chain/franchises) make their own as does Crescent City Brewhouse.
Abita has a great brewery tour and their cafe serves food that I think is certainly better than awful and gets better after each beer!

+10000 mrsfury!!! I LOVE the brewery tour at the Abita Brewery...but damn the food at the pub is HORRIBLE. If you want to eat out there before/after the tour, stop at Camelia Cafe. Everything I've had there is very good especially the raw oysters.
