What happened to the quality of bread @ Zabars?
In the 80s I used to buy delicious black bread studded with raisins, maybe nuts at Zabars, it was so dense and fresh. I visited the city and bought 2 different loaves of black bread, one was very expensive ($11.50 for a large loaf) and the other was in the normal range and fell apart in my hands, neither had any quality or good taste. I couldn't believe it, where do you get good bread in the city these days? Does anyone know what happened to the quality of the bread at Zabars?
Cannot vouch for dense, heavy breads at Zabar's or anywhere else. They are insanely priced everywhere. The Sullivan St loaves at Zabar's are actually the best overall, better than HK Sullivan store iteself and cheaper though the only types I have gotten are the Filone and Stirato but they go quickly. Forget Grandaisy.
The Bavarian/Easter Euro breads are becoming very scarce.
Hard to pony up near 7-10 bux for some small loaf of something in that vein but still not really what you are seeking and will probably disappoint.
