Where can I buy Okra?

Hello All --

I need to find okra for Saturday. I went to the Amish Market on 45th street, and stopped in a few other random stores. I'd rather not traipse all over Manhattan looking for it if anyone happens to know where I might find some.

Is it out of season now? Is it something not a lot of people buy? If I had to guess, I might think Chelsea Market may have it, but I live in Murray Hill and would rather not waste a trip.

Any thoughts?

  1. I see it at Whole Foods in Chelsea all the time. Just call before you go to make sure its in stock.

    1. Chelsea Market had okra on 3/17 - I saw it with my own eyes. I'm surprised you're having trouble finding it; even my crappy local Fine Fare stocks okra (in styrofoam, like everything else).

      1. I always see it in the produce and frozen food sections but then again I live uptown. Try Fairway Harlem. You can order online if they have it in stock. Otherwise Pathmark.

        1. Check the Indian groceries just south of Murray Hill. It's sometimes called "ladyfingers", too, and very commonly used in Indian cuisine. I've seen it at Kalustyan's in the past, though I haven't been in a while.

If you are willing to travel outside of Manhattan, Patel Brothers in Jackson Heights definitely has it.

I actually have *not* seen it at the Manhattan Fruit Exchange in Chelsea Market.

          1. Fairway usually has it and so does the WFM on Houston. Call first though..
