Birthday dinner suggestions

The grandparents are coming into town to take us out for our son's 17th bday -- something quintescentially LA would be fun for them. We know Pasadena, Glendale, SGV pretty well but might like to venture downtown or partway west. My son is a very adventurous eater with great taste. His best friend is very very picky (pasta, simple pizzas, steak). Grandparents are pretty classy. Cost isn't a huge issue, but i don't want it to look like we're taking advantage of their generosity (<$40-50pp would be good - we're unlikely to drink much). Locally I'd probably pick Shiro, Maison Akira, Bistro 45 or Tre Venezie. I'd welcome advice to help us expand our culinary horizons. Thanks.

  1. Try one of the oldest LA eateries... Phillipe's or Cole's for some LA history, both founded in 1908. It'd be an interesting experiennce. Or, something also old and fancy, like Lawry's, Musso and Frank's, or the Pacific Dining Car? It looks like the picky eating "best friend" is going to limit you to anything more exotic.

Or, try a restaurant with a Michelin star or two... like Water Grill or Spago. Spago is very "L.A."
