Black Cod - Monterey Fish - Yum!
bought a beautiful piece of Black Cod ( Sablefish/Butterfish ) from Monterey Fish yesterday. I've had this type of fish before but this piece was noticeably fresh...... the rich texture reminds me of Chilean Sea Bass. This is a great type of fish for those afraid to cook fish - would be almost impossible to overcook this fish. it was caught locally - Bolinas IIRC. Monterey Fish continues to offer great seafood. they have a big bucket of ice for transporting your purchase home........(self serve)

the one that i bought was 4 lbs. ($3X4lb =$12, very very good deal) I saw some bigger ones around 10 lbs.
there's a white board in front of the harbor office and it lists what's availabe on the boat.

Thanks, that's a great tip. I've been hoping that one of our local smokers will take up smoking sable fish. At that price, it should be economically viable.
I also understand that Cook's Seafood in Menlo Park has black cod occasionally.

Hudson Fish usually has black cod fillets at various Berkeley farmers' markets. I think it's around $12 a pound.

Unfortunately, I don't eat much fish but after reading this thread, decided to go to the Seafood Center of Clement St. Purchased a beautiful piece of black cod priced at $9.99/lb. Rinsed and dried it at home, drizzled little olive oil, sprinkled salt and pepper and broiled under broiler for 3-4 minutes per side. Beautiful fish, very "buttery" in texture, produced good amount of liquid as well. As others have indicated, seems like it would be a forgiving fish in terms of cooking. Served it over a bed of sauteed spinach. A new favorite dish.

Agreed -- so easy and delicious. I like to marinate black cod in miso or kasu (sake lees) and then broil.
Is there someplace in San Francisco to get a good deal on a large quantity of black cod (5-6 lbs.)?

My Sushi Benefactor made dinner for me last night, black cod marinated in miso and mirin. He buys it regularly from H & H Fish of Santa Cruz at the farmers market in Sunnyvale or Palo Alto. http://www.hhfreshfish.com/
For the quantity you're seeking, you might try cash and carry with one of the SF wholesalers, as that would be a trade size order.

Not sure about now, but about a month ago I bought local black cod at JR Seafood Wholesale. I had them cut me a smaller piece, but larger amounts were definitely available - i think they are primarily wholesale, but have a storefront and display case too for consumers.
They are right near the corner of Oakdale and Bayshore, nearish to Alemany Farmer's Market and close to the produce terminal.

Gordon, thanks for posting about local black cod (aka gindara). I was just thinking about it too, as it is an unsung local catch. I've only had it at Chinese, Japanese, and Korean restaurants for the most part around here, but recently had a sumptuous panroasted example at Mantra (Cal-Indian) in Palo Alto.
I bought a filet of black cod from the Santa Rosa Seafood booth at the Santa Rosa farmers market last month, and it was so fresh. I just seasoned it and broiled it in the toaster oven, nothing could be easier. I think it was $15 per lb. Santa Rosa Seafood tucks a baggie of crushed ice in with your purchase.
