Kipferl and Dose, Clerkenwell, London
Tiny crisp crumbs from the vanilla kipferl, a U-shaped Austrian biscuit, with a slightly moist dusting of powdered sugar. Satisfying light vanilla flavour. Good chocolate flavour in the sachertorte, nice medium dense cake layers with a thin fruity spread of apricot jam in the middle. The cake layers aren't exactly moist, but are nevertheless delicious and certainly not dry.
An Americano made with their highlighted coffee from Minas Gervais in Brazil. Excellent mellow flavours, not obscured by the roast. The long finish is clean and nutty, and carries a deep honey-like sweetness. Excellent stuff.
Noticed a new place around the corner from Kurz and Lang called The Farm. Was closed when I was there, but looks cafe-like, with a sign for Square Mile coffee, and statements indicating that they source ingredients direct from farms etc. Anyone been?
Dose is the best thing to happen to Long Lane in a long time. Totally tiny but the coffee is unbeatable and the food is really good too. (Daily-changing soups are from Bea's Of Bloomsbury and the brownies & blondies are addictive). I've not been back to Pret since!
The Farm makes a big fuss about 'provenance' but is basically just a pricey lunch take-out with the usual sandwiches etc. They do pretty good soups and pies though. (With mash and gravy, they're £6 a piece).
Has anyone tried Tea (near St Pauls) yet? I'm not sure how new it is but it looks lovely and has a good tea menu.
