Has anyone tried a dripolator?

I just found what I think is an old fashioned dripolator, stainless steel. It's got two compartments: you put the coffee grounds in the bottom of the top container, put the lid over the grounds, then pour almost boiling water into the top container, and the coffee drips into the bottom compartment. The coffee is definitely stronger than regular drip and tastes closer to a french press. What is the history behind this thing?
