I'd avoid the closest restaurants like University Grill. Ordinary food, ordinary atmosphere. There is nothing in walking distance like Naples Phil or the Sugden on Fifth. Here are my four picks:

Cin Cin At the corner of Cypress Lake and MacGregor. Tiny little shopping area with several restaurants including the Prawnbroker, which I do not recommend. CinCin as you can imagine by the name, is mediterranean in style.

http://www.cincingrille.com/

Bacchus at the Bell Tower Shops. Shannon Yates is one of the better chef's in town and this is his newest place. Great wines, good food.

http://bacchus.swankylifestyle.com/menus.php For the record, I think the Swankylifestyle stuff is tacky.

Little casual Italian hole in the wall dive: Buon Appetito. You'll have to google the map, but you could walk from here I guess. Now, be forewarned, this is a tiny family place. Long Island Red Sauce Italian. The kind of place the owner brings a bottle of sambucca to the table after to talk with you.

I also love Trattoria di Napoli, another hole in the wall Mediterranean. The owner is always in evidence and she is a great cook. Paella is superb. I love it so much, I haven't ordered anything else. Others agree.

kath, lilmsfoodie is the lady who is in the know. i'd go with her suggestions.

btw, lilmsfoodie, you are mentioned in the bayfront bistro's homepage! http://www.bayfrontbistro.com/blog/everyone-is-talking-about-bayfront-bistro-on-fort-myers-beach
(and i love your new (?) pig avatar!).

question: does buon apetito still post no menu prices?

no prices, you just ask. very cheap still and they will do things special for you. They went through a rough patch when they tried to open a second one, but are back on track now. This is no Angelinas but it always has a party atmosphere there. Just make sure you ask for al dente.

I haven't been to Bayfront, but have heard good things and they do not have to do much to be number 1 on the beach. Spring break traffic has kept me away but we will go soon and I'll report.

Last week we noticed that Doc Ford's is opening a second location under the bridge on the bay side. It used to be the ghastly Bridge restaurant that just completed its slow and tortuous death last year. It and the old Dixie Fish Co are welcome additions there. Dixie Fish is in an historic building that used to house Henry Ford's boat. Fun views right on the water near the shrimp docks. Hope for Fort Myers Beach. At least for drinks. I have high hopes for Doc's there.

lilmsfoodie, you saw this from bayfront's website, right?

“I have yet to find a good restaurant on Fort Myers Beach itself, but there is a lot of buzz about a new place at the new marina behind the Publix. The Marina is Snook Bight and the restaurant is Bayfront Bistro. www.bayfrontbistro.com”,

thanks for showing it to me. It really doesn't say anything other than I am hopeful. Won't go until after April 15th when the traffic evaporates, although it is much lighter than in the past.
