I ventured out to BartonG's last evening with 7 business associates last night. Of course when we arrived the ladies were eager to try their signature martinis that arrive smoking, fizzing and putting on a show all by themselves. They're crazy expensive but for a first-time thing they were entertaining and delicious as well.
On to dinner. We started off with appetizers of course. We ordered this seafood monstrosity that came in a huge martini glass and it was awesome. It had a lobster tail, lump crab, crab legs and a few other tasty items. Like the martinis, it was crazy expensive and over the top but worth it on a big night out. We also enjoyed the VooDoo shrimp and it too was very tasty. Lobster Pop Tarts were also interesting. The appetizers are HUGE and easily feed 2 to 4 people. Off to a good start!
The we started ordering meals. Swordfish, 2-pound Australian lobster tails, whole friend snapper, rib-eye steak, sea bass. We're all friends (and experienced foodies) so we're tasting each other's meals at will. The swordfish was cooked correctly and very tasty. The Aussie Lobster Tails were also cooked correctly, market priced and very, very tasty. The whole snapper was larger than what you usually get and also a treat. You might not necessarily expect a steak at a place like BartonG's to be incredible...this one was! It was the most tender and flavorable rib-eye that I've ever eaten and I was surprised to find out that this beef came out of Clewiston. The sea bass was the only disappointment. It was cooked correctly but lacked flavor. The big surprise was the Himilayan Black Rice. I've never tasted rice like this before and it was nothing short of incredible.
The food at BartonG's was extremely good. Overall, not the best I've ever dined on but very, very good. Presentation is the thing at BartonG's. Lobster PopTarts arrive in....a toaster! SwordFish arrives on pirate's sword and so on. Everyone really enjoyed this part of the evening/meal.
For dessert we went with a "medley tray" of assorted delites and everyone was very pleased with what was offered. I'm a chocolate purist and there was nothing there for me on the tray so I went with some chocolate ice cream that was very, very good.
The only real rocks to throw involved the servers and the air conditioning. The servers there work as a team but they didn't seem to be on the same page and you expect that an upscale restaurant that's very pricey. Meals didn't arrive together, servers didn't quite know what went where and they weren't around to pour the wines. They were very, very nice and forthcoming with information with no airs of snobbiness and that was refreshing. But this is an area that needs to be addressed. The A/C was also an issue as it got unbearably hot in the latter portion of our meal and that was unacceptable. Thankfully they got it going again and we came back to life.
Overall, this was a very good experience that I would recommend. The food is the thing and it was very, very good. The only meal that disappointed was the sea bass. The remaining meals were delightful. Their presentation was well thought out, over the top and memorable. Service needs to improve and that would keep the 5th star from coming their way in my book.
Such a fun restaurant a real treat! Very very expensive.... I think we ordered an ice cream Sunday that could serve more than 10 people for 80 $ US.
Its a concept menu...
Bass comes in a bag
Popcorn shrimp comes in a bag of popcorn
Swordfish on a sword....
The desserts are out of this world. However I think that besides the presentation of the food. its nothing sooo special. I definitely give a 10/10 for presentation.
Hey, FD...It's in Miami Beach......On the west side of Miami Beach on West Avenue (or Street, not sure)......There was no pulled pork on the menu!! (LOL!!)....We had a really good time......Very, very pricey.....But looking forward to another trip when finances permit!.......
It was pricey to be sure....but the food was very, very good.....if not great.....And I've dined at many of SoBe's finest.....and in my humble opinion.....BGs fits in the mix.....I was also dining with 7 other hard-core foodies that frequent SoFla's best and they were also highly impressed with BGs....Again....the only rocks were that the sea bass wasn't the tastiest....and the service needed a bit of fine-tuning....Beyond that it was a first-rate night out......
