Atlanta Downtown (Midtown) Happy Hour
Our server is down at work so I am twiddling my thumbs and thinking of vacation. Some friends and I are going to be in Atlanta in September for Dragoncon. We're staying at the Georgian Terrace but will be spending a lot of time at the host hotels (downtown Marriott, Hyatt, Hilton, etc).
We have no trouble finding places when we want to go out for the night. However, I've never had much luck finding a place downtown for happy hour. After 8 or 10 hours of major geek-fest it would be nice to find a little bar to unwind and take a break from the parade of storm troopers, barbarians and tourist-gougers. Is there any place like that downtown? Someplace locals go?
Alternately, it could be someplace close the Georgian Terrace if that provides better options than downtown. But we'll be on foot/Marta mostly so it needs to be close to either the GT or the downtown core. Gay or straight, doesn't make a difference as long as it's a relaxed hang out that doesn't cost an arm and a leg for HH.
Thanks in advance!
PS. We'll likely hit Mary Mack's while we are in town but if you have any other Southern, soul food or distinctly Atlanta places to go for dinner that would be great. We can drive for dinner if necessary. I miss the Shark Bar that used to be downtown--it was great.
Depending on what time of day (happy hour to me means 5-ish), I didn't think Halo opened that early. But I'm a bleeping geezer who doesn't go out any more.
The bar at the new W Hotel down that way was bringing in a heavy-hitter mixologist. I'm too lazy to look up the details and speak intelligently about who/what right now. But it's on my list of places to check out. Have to admit I really enjoyed Besha Rodell's elegant diss in the Loaf of the square-jawed frat boys drinking their cosmos at BLT Steak.
There's also The Vortex and a relatively-new Taco Mac up Peachtree a bit. Or you could hop on MARTA and visit the beer paradise that is downtown Decatur (Brick Store, Leon's, Twain's).
