Convivio's Service?

Nancy191 Mar 16, 2009 11:21 AM

How is the service here? I've been to Scarpetta's many times and I love it there. I 've always wanted to try Convivio but I read some bad reviews about the service there...Any comments?

Wow. Surprising to hear so many comments of negative service. I didn't experience any of that whatsoever (didn't go for RW). Everybody was attentive from hostess to busboy, and I didn't feel rushed at all. The only thing was the guy giving out the bread must have been new as his hand was shaking as he handed over the bread with the tongs. But I wouldn't call that a lapse in service as he was trying.

I've also found the food very good. But I think the pastas are much better than the mains (not to say that the mains are bad).

Last night my girlfriend and i had dinner at Convivio. We were excited that they were taking part in RW.

Let me start by saying that the food was for the most part spot on. We decided to start with a few Sfizi (small tapas style plates) additional to the RW menu, for the app course we had the heirloom tomato soup and the pancetta salad, followed by the orecchiette and the hanger steak, we also decided on a cheese course before our dessert.

My issues all have to do with the service, from the minute we checked in with the hostess to when the check was dropped, the service was lousy. For a restaurant that has 3 stars I have to say that the service was very disappointing.

The young lady working the podium did not make eye contact, smile or greet us when walked up to. She just asked us for our name and when we were lead to our table by another host there was no "enjoy your evening "or anything like that.

On to our server, not once througout our 5 courses did he ever check on us, not once. Our second course was dropped with our soiled silver and plates from our first course, the soiled silverware and pltes were never removed and lerft there until after our app course was cleared. There was no table maintenance whatsoever, no folding our napkins when we would go to the restroom . It's not as though our server was completely overwhelmed , we clearly saw walk by our table many times. The busboy asked us after our cheese course if we were expecting dessert which we said we were. That something he should already know for two reasons; we both had a dessert fork and spoon on the table which should be a single for the staff that we probably are expecting another course since you do not need a spoon to eat cheese with, also because the server should of communicated this to him earlier. In a 3 star service enviroment communication is very important between the service staff.

Our check was dropped with dirty glasses and silver still on the table which the server never cleared from the time we asked for the check to when he picke up the check to process and when it was finally dropped for us to sign.

A truly disappointing experience due to the service.

Ugh - I had reservations for RW dinner yseterday, but didn't go since the menu was pretty uninspiring. Sounds like the service wasn't much better.

My wife and I did a RW lunch at Convivo yesterday. While the panchetta salad with balsamic was, to our taste, a little off (less panchetta and balsamic, more figs please), the hangar steak and deserts were great. The bread and oil were excellent. We thought the service was very good -- no complaints whatsoever. Lunch was a leisurely 90 minutes and everything flowed smoothly. I really liked the descriptions of the wine by the glass. They included information on the winemaker and area along with the style of the wine. And you cannot beat the price for RW. My only complaint is the location -- kinda' can't get there from here (UWS) very easily.

I felt like the service was fine, even though we went during restaurant week. But the food was...

        bland ,average, boring.

Although we received a $25 gift certificate, I am not sure that we will go back.

And yes, I understand that one should have lower expectations for RW but I have had fantastic RW meals at other similarly priced institutions.

          Reservations on telephone was rude.

I should add my most recent Convivio RW experience, which was quite pleasant. Got the panchetta salad with balsamic which was fantastic, and the hangar steak which was decent if uninspiring. The chocolate and caramel dessert was probably the biggest miss - the caramel ice cream was great but the caramel in the chocolate tart was tooth-achingly sweet and then after eating the whole thing I got a bellyache. But I would come back, if only to use up my certificate. And service this time was better.

I am shocked that the other people had such a bad experience. My BF and I went for dinner and the service was amazing. Very attentive from the second we walked in until we left. That was months ago so it may have changed.

I agree. I have been there numerous times and have been treated like royalty, and the service has been very good, with an occasional glitch in the kitchen causing a delay between courses, but when that happened they brought out an extra course for us. One time, on a very busy Friday, we had a significant wait for our table, but again they compensated by bringing us extra appetizers. I always reserve using Opentable, so have not had the experience of dealing with anyone by phone, but when we arrive the hosts are always very welcoming.

We went last year and service was fine. It was a weekday night. Not sure if it was how we ordered but I did not find the food worth hurrying back for.

The food was excellent, the price was reasonable, but the service left a great deal to be desired. First, they're doing you a favor when they seat you. Then they rushed us through our meal to a degree that was just plain uncomfortable. There were three of us and we all ordered multi-course meals - soup to nuts - and we were in and out of the restaurant in approximately one hour. Somebody was constantly at our elbows, topping off our wine glasses in an obvious effort to make sure that we finished one bottle quickly and ordered another before our main courses had even arrived. And servers were standing by with our next course the moment the previous dishes were whisked away. Good as the food was - and it was really good! - I wouldn't go back unless someone we were dining with had their heart set on it.

I also felt rushed when I dined there. It was mostly towards the end of the meal. They just asked if we wanted anything else and when we said no, the bill was immediately put on the table without asked. I haven't even finished my desserts!

And my server was no where to be found several times I wanted something or asked questions during the meal.

                  Forget it.
I just called up for a reservation and I was so put off by their manner of talking to you that I told them to forget it.

I'll just have to live without them.
So my thoughts about their service was correct
