Strawberry Cones - Crazy Japanese pizza in Richmond's Aberdeen Mall

  • 5

My daughters and I were in the general vicinity so we thought we'd stop in at Aberdeen and pick up a few knicknacks at Daiso (actually "The Daiso"). It has been a long while since our last visit to Aberdeen and since then, Strawberry Cones, a large Japanese pizza chain, had opened a stall in the food court. It is their first location outside Japan. Comparisons to Japadog downtown become obvious with the Japanese-Italian fusions topping their pizzas.

My daughters wanted to have bubble tea and egg waffles from some other stalls, so it was up to me to sample this stuff. (I tried in vain to convince them they would like it...."no way" they said. Good for them.)

I ordered the Mochi-Teriyaki (Terimochi) Pizza which is topped with glutinous rice balls (mochi) and teriyaki chicken, cheese and shreds of nori.

The verdict? Well, I had my expectations suitably lowered....very bland, but it wasn't bad...certainly better than some of the pizza slices I have had around town...and definitely more interesting in a gastronomically perverse sort of way.

I don't know if I am game to try some of their signature slices (their "famous" Mochimo - Hokkaido Potato cake pizza, or their Potetama-chan (Potato egg salad, mayo, sausage.) But at least now I can say I tried it.

  1. Mmmm Japanese pizza. Don't know about the mochi, but the other combos are not bad. My fave when I lived there was tuna mayo.

It is interesting how 'over the top' Japanese interpretations of western food can get...I'm still waiting for a MOS Burger to open up here....I'm sure that will happen soon enough.

mmm... I remember loving MOS Burger.
The pizzas were interesting (I tried the mochi chicken and the tuna potato hokkaido), and not at all bad ... but I'd prefer other offerings in the food court.

    2. That's one fluffy looking pizza!

"Fluffy" is the perfect word to describe it. "Pillowy" would be my second choice.
