Tips for Dining, Eating and Food Shopping in Hawaii (inc Honolulu, Oahu and Maui)

Maui recommendations?

I am heading to Maui for a week of r&r and am looking for some recommendations for foodie-approved places to eat. I prefer local fare and native ingredients to the tourist scene. I recall being quite unhappy with the food options on my last trip to Hawaii and don't want to repeat that experience. Thanks!

    1. You will probably be better served on the Elsewhere Board. Here is a great review of some of the top Maui restaurants.

Another great local food type of place is mamas ribs in Napili. I can't stop thinking about the pulled pork sandwich I had there. Line of local workers at lunch pulled me in - had dinner take out once - great condo fare for the family everyone enjoyed and I made chicken salad the next day for beach. Had quite a few pulled pork sandwiches.....I'd go up for a coffee at that excellent little coffee shop a few doors down - it would be a few hours before dinner - so freakin good.Whoops sorry just realized I hadn't gone back to the top to hit reply .....sorry

Thanks for you recommendation for Mama's Ribs. We got there after a long day of driving and hiking to Hana and consumed their combination plates of BBQ chicken and ribs. They are fantastic.

            2. The best local fare on Maui is at Da Kitchen, a restaurant at small casual restaurant at the Triangle Square strip mall in Kahului (near K-Mart). They have huge "plate lunches" at low prices. You'll see only locals there and no tourists.

Here's a review that includes a menu list and photos of the decor and of the food:

Now that you posted it here, they'll see many tourists, including myself and party of 6.

                      1. The best meal we had on maui was at the Lahaina grill. Lahaina was an interesting place. Normally not my gigg but the Lahaina Grill was well worth it. The Maui onion encrused tuna was one of the best tuna dishes I have ever had.
