Staying in Union Square for 4 days..

My husband and I are going to be staying in Union Square starting this Saturday. We won't have a car, but are perfectly happy to take cabs around. We would really appreciate suggestions for great Italian and ethnic (Mexican, Chinese, Ethiopian, Indian, Thai) food that would be suitable for a vegetarian (me) for either lunch or dinner. My husband is from northern Italy, so no nouveau-Italian, please! As long as the food is good, we are pretty flexible in terms of price, from cheap to $100/person. It would be good if the places are not too grungy, although they do not need to be fancy. Many, many thanks!!

How does your husband feel about Sardinian food? If the answer is positive, try La Ciccia. Definitely not nouveau anything. You won't be sorry.

You're welcome. You probably saw there are tons of links to posts about La Ciccia (it gets a lot of love on this board) but here is mine from Nov 2008 http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/573876

I also just read a post from today that was very positive and mentioned a number of dishes we did not try.

BTW, if you go, you might want to consider taking the J Church Muni line transit out there rather than cabbing. It's really easy and pretty fast (half an hourish) if you time it right, and it stops less than a block from the restaurant.

The veggie burrito at Taqueria Cancun gets high marks from the veghead community. The al pastor (pork) is very good. Another option, although Californicated, is La Taqueria.

R&G Lounge and Great Eastern usually gets mentioned for Chinese in Chinatown. Both will have veggie options, although if it's only two, harder to get more then 3 dishes.
