Jim Gould's Champaign Il.

  • 1

I had dinner at J Gould's in Champaign Illinois last night with a group of 30 people. First of all, my group had 6:30 reservations and asked to change those to 530 only a few hours earlier---no problem!! I had the calamari app that came served with a Balsamic glaze and the typical marinara. I'm not a huge balsamic fan, but this was very nice and the calamari was tender---not chewy. Nothing earth-shattering, but very well executed.

At this point I'll mentioned that, again, we had 30 diners and the service was, frankly, very very good. I like to drink at dinner and at most I had an empty glass for all of 120 seconds in the 2.5 hours we were there. We were not a difficult group, but 30 by definition is difficult and I was very impressed by the service.

For dinner I had the steak special which was a 21 day dry-aged strip steak. It was simply excellent!! I've had any number of steaks at 'name' steakhouses in the Chicago area and this ranks with any of them. At 25.95 pretty much a bargain.

For dessert I had the creme brulee which ended up being a mint version with a chocolate sugar crust. Refreshing and different.

Overall a very nice experience, if I'm in the area I'll be back.

  1. Glad you had a good meal...I have found lunch/dinner to be hit or miss in quality as well as service. But the Sunday brunch is consistently good, imho.
