Stromboli Withdrawal
CAN ANYONE TELL ME HOW I CAN GET A GREAT STROMBOLI SENT TO ME.
Ok, I moved from Philly 20+ years ago to San Diego and went from yearning for warm weather to yearning for those great Philly/NJ/NY/Pgh foods. Gotta admit I don't miss the ice forming on my mustache while making my way from the train station to the office and usually getting splashed by dirty slush from a cab driver that thinks he gets extra bonus points for that but, I do miss the stromboli.....delicious dough rolled with fantastic pepperoni, great cheese and the right amount of seasoning and sauce...my mouth waters as I can still taste the comforting and flavorful delicacy that I guess I assumed would be available anywhere....but NOOOO, not only have 99.9% of the populus of this beautiful state never heard of a Stromboli, I can't seem to find a place that can even ship them. Yes, I've tried Leonetti's, it is stromboli but only for those of us desperate enough to try anything. I hope someone responds with a viable option. Even tried making my own but I guess it's the SO CAL environment that doesn't allow those flavors to be created locally.
While I'm at it, how about a real cheesesteak??? California has only one place that I have found that comes close to Philly and that is a small hole in the wall in San Francisco called Busters at 366 Columbus in the heart of little Italy. I've even made excuses to travel to San Fran to get their cheesesteak and they are second to Philly.
One last request.....Sicilian Pizza....another rarety out here in the wild unsophisticated (food wise) west. I'd like to buy a couple of those real old blackend steel square pans so that I can cook my own.....if you know of any pizza place that has some old ones for sale...I'm in. Must say I have found 1 place in California and it happens to be in San Diego and it's called Sicilian Thing Pizza, 4036 30th Street in North Park. As close to the Sicilian Pizza I used to get in Pittsburgh back in the early 70's...
I know someone out there can point me in the right direction. This site is fantastic.
Thanks,
JIm

Keep suggestions coming. I appreciate everyones response....I'm new to this site and didn't know what to expect but there are a lot of friendly, helpful smart people out there willing to provide suggestions.
I'll keep everyone posted as to the results. I have no doubt that there are many other displaced Philadelphians, Pittsburghers, Jerseyites looking for the same things. Thanks all. I'll be checking this site daily. -

re: Gorp512
I did try leoneti's, ordered two boxes a year or so ago. They were an edible substitute but, didn't compare with the real thing. A number of years back the grocery stores carried a stromboli that was excellent can't remember the name...it was before all of the hot pockets (which are food "stuff" and edible if you are 17 and eat anything). Now, I'm hoping to find my "connection"....my "supplier".....drug of choice = stromboli.

re: Gorp512
I know they call them fish tacos but....I'm not sure what part of the fish they use. Yes, there is no place like San Diego (I've looked) but, there are those other factors that add to quality of life (maybe not longevity but quality) such as stromboli, cheesesteaks, Mancini's bread, philly pretzel from the street corner and more that we take for granted.
Thanks for the post...I'm trying to have the best of both worlds...can't ship the weather and beauty back to Philly but I'm hoping that someone can ship the stromboli and cheesesteaks to San Diego......then, true paradise will be complete.

I can't stop laughing after reading your post! My sister has lived in San Francisco for the past 12 years and is now moving back to Pittsburgh because of the food! Can you believe that??? She claims that in a sea of great restaurants she can't get a sandwich without frickin' sprouts on it. I'm going to gain 20 pounds taking her out for pizza, perogies, and steak salads prepared the proper way: with cheese and french fries on top!

re: Davecli
Hey Dave.....let me help you out......when your sis gets there, order all the great things, eat only half and then send the other half to me! There you go.....get you down to 10 instead of 20 and I don't mind taking the hit.....seriously. I sure can understand why she would want to move back. There is a quality of life issue that we don't think about when moving to "paradise" and that is the things we take for granted...being able to walk to the corner hole in the wall and get a great Stromboli or cheesesteak or pulling over the side of the road to buy a $1 bag (Philly pretzels of course). Never know what you had until you don't have it anymore.
Thanks for the post and make sure you take your sister to all the wonderful places. Pick up some Mancini's bread (buy a couple as one will disappear on the way home), get some chipped ham (you should see the looks I get when I ask for that here) from Islay's or Bressler's, stop at Penn Mac for some supplies and fabulous cheese and then find a sicillian pizza.
Thanks again,
Jim

This sounds like sacrilege but according to the Philly Inquirer, Tony Luke is coming out with a frozen cheesesteak that is surprisingly good....

I make Stromboli for my home catering business, and people (from church suppers to frat house dinners) tell me it is delicious. There is really nothing to it, and I'd be happy to fed ex you some overnight if you really want it. Let me know how to reach you by phone or email and we can discuss it.
