Mozaic on Main St
Four of us had dinner at Mozaic last night and enjoyed it tremendously! The menu has ambitious dishes but the kitchen really knows what they're doing and delivers the thrills.
My particular favorite dishes were the sauteed quail and forest mushroom appetizer and the spiced-glazed duck breast entree. The quail tasted like a quail au vin, rich and wonderful. The duck came with a wonderful star anise sauce, and the crispy goat cheese polenta and poached pears made great accompaniments.
The pasta dishes were also lovely. The white anchovy gnocchi did indeed have little bits of white anchovy in the gnocchi, but the affect was the anchovy heightening and deepening of overall flavor rather than standing out on its own. The butternut squash ravioli with sherry maple brown butter also had a lot of depth and didn't fall into the trap of being too sweet. Everything was tasty here though, including the blue crab mango napoleon appetizer and the Chilean sea bass with tagliatelle entree.
The one problem here is that the portion sizes are a bit too big, especially the appetizers. We still managed to split one dessert four ways. The Tangier was a rich flourless pear walnut cake accompanied by a delicious carmelized banana vanilla ice cream and a citrus creme anglaise. Next time we'll split appetizers here.
The coconut apricot soup with strawberry mint ice amuse and the orange pernod sorbet intermezzo were further delicious additions to the meal.
With our diverse appetizers and entrees we enjoyed the excellent wine by the glass selection, available in both 3 oz and 6 oz pours. The Lacryma Christi was particularly memorable with the gnocchi, but the other choices ranging from Napa Valley Cabernet and Chardonnay to Southern French Grenache and Rose were all winners.
What a wonderful food finale for our trip to Sarasota!

Glad to hear that you had a good experience there. Four of us went last year and unfortunately our experience was the opposite. It took them forever to serve our food, no apologizes! I honestly can't remember what any of us had, but not good enough to return. The thing that really made me mad was that I emailed them, explained how the evening went and never got a response ... that ended it for me.
