Nutria

Was wondering if there are any restaurants that serve nutria. If not restaurants, then who uses nutria as food nowadays?

Thanks, all!

Andrew Zimmern did a segment on nutria on his program Bizarre Foods airing on the Travel Channel. He went out with a gentleman who clubbed a couple of nutria over the head. The gent then took Mr. Zimmern back to his place for a nutria feast. The Gulf Coast episode is available for download on iTunes:

didn't Alton Brown have them in a dining on asphalt episode? They appear to be bought for alligator feed. Personally, I'd rather eat the alligator.

It seems to me there is at least one country in South America where they are a fairly common entree, but I can't remember where. Maybe Sam knows and will chime in.

If you Google "nutria recipes" that will bring up a slew of them. And there was a time (mid 20th century) when the fur industry tried to interest the chic in wearing them as coats. Didn't catch on.

If you want a 'culture' reference, the TV show designing women referenced nutria coats. Jean Smart (I forget her character's name) bought a nutria coat and caught hell for wearing fur. (As written).
I tried to do a one woman write-in campaign praising her choice of fur as ecologically excellent, but I didn't get a single letter back. So much for the THomassons being enviro-friendly.

Think of the thousands of acres of marshland we might have saved.

Thanks shallots & AreBe. I guess the nutria will thrive pretty unmolested by diners of the human persuasion. If anyone, happens to know more, I'd love the info. I'm putting together a weird food book for a major travel publisher.

You might contact the National Park Service folks who are at the Jean La Fitte Park, not the unit in the Quarter, but the one on the west bank with the walks through the swamps. Nutria are a problem for them and they might know something.

Humans in Central Asia eat them.

About 15 years ago there was talk of a food challenge to do with nutria what Prudhomme did with RedFish.
We left NOLA about that time and never heard anymore of the challenge.
