Jamaican beef patty/Caribbean food in Austin?

  • 8

Recently relocated to Austin from Brooklyn and looking for a spot to get a Jamaican beef patty, and decent Caribbean food in general.

  1. Just had a Jamaican patty for lunch today...unfortunately it was from the frozen section of Central Market. :-)

yeah, pretty sure spec's has frozen as well.

    2. I've never been to this place out in Marble Falls, but it's been on my "wish list" for awhile. Maybe one of the other hounds can let us know if it's worth the drive?

        1. It's true. Hoover's has some of the best jerk chicken I've ever eaten. The seasonings are more of a dry rub and the chicken is smoked. A friend who visited Jamaica told me that it's more like what they have there than what we were used to eating (in Brooklyn at, for example, Brawta). Really excellent stuff.

However, I think the Hoover's address listed above is for the financial reporting company, not the restaurant.

Also, I don't think I've seen a beef patty since I moved here from Brooklyn. Sorry.

there is a north location on 183 if you are more north than central...

        2. well, still havent found anything in Austin so we went ahead and just made our own. We used this recipe, added a few extra spices to the filling, and it came out great:

So this is more than 5 YEARS late haha, but Austin now has 2 Jamaican food trucks that I know of that serve beef patties. Gemma Love on South Congress (and Gibson) and Tony's on 11th st. Haven't had Tony's yet, but Gemma Love's is $4 and very filling. Really tender on the inside too, I would definitely get it again.

Chago's on N. Lamar also serves Caribbean food...not sure whether they have beef patties, though.
