Good Food by City College?
I am searching for anyplace in the general vicinity of the Ocean Campus of City College on Phelan Avenue that serves good (or at least palatable) food. Can anyone help me out here?

Halfway through the semester last year I found a roach coach between the Visual Arts and Creative Arts building. Not spectacular food but it had some healthier and better options than the vending machines or cafeteria.

There is a place that serves pho and bahn mi on Ocean that is pretty good. It's a little ways West from City College, but not that far. Pho Ha Tien

Beijing Restaurant on Ocean and Alemany. No lunch served on Mondays though.

That was my first thought, but it is a mile away.
Also in that range or Roxie and Red Sea, which get good reviews on their deli sandwiches. Red Sea has pizza too.

Glen Park is the closest place to City College with a reasonable collection of quality food places. If you're not driving, you can take the 43 from City College over to Monterey and the 23 to Glen Park. Broken Record on Geneva is as close as some of the other places mentioned and has terrific "soul food", but only serves food starting at 6. Pho ha Tien mentioned above isn't bad, it's not great either, but it sure beats the Mexican places in the area. Watch out, it's closed on Tuesdays. The Happy Bakery on Ocean doesn't look like much, but you can get a plate of duck and rice for around six or seven dollars.
Whatever you do, avoid the Mexican place on Ocean close to City, La Parilla. I went with a half off coupon, the quality of the food merited another half off.

I was just going to suggest Happy Bakery too. It's my favorite roast duck in the SF Bay Area. I tend to order one to go, and if I have time, a bowl of soup noodles topped with the duck to eat there.

The sandwiches at Java Jitters are very good and their coffee is excellent (Ritual Roasters).

Well if you like burgers I always enjoyed Beep's Burgers on Ocean right across from the college. Drive-In style place, old school, nothing fancy but good burgers. I haven't been there in years but I doubt much has changed.

Agree about Beep's Burgers. My son lives up the block from there and is a frequent patron. He particularly loves the milkshakes. Be aware that there is no indoor table seating and that they shut the milkshake machine down one hour before closing.

When I took night classes at CCSF, I'd get an occasional bag of Beep's steak fries to munch on while waiting for the bus. It was just right when the temps got low and the wind blasted through all the layers I wore.

You say the general vicinity, so here are some that are certainly easy driving distance based on spending quite a bit of time near City College a few months ago:
1) As mentioned, Glen Park has lots of well-reputed choices. Gialina for instance has wondrously delicious pizza, different from other top tier San Francisco places, but just as good in its own style.
2) Red Sea Market makes a wonderful meatball sub - they rescued me one day when I needed a quick lunch to go.
3) Lucky River has decent Chinese food. There's one particular sparerib presentation that has gotten great raves in other posts.
I wish Beijing Restaurant had been open when I was up there - based on all the great reports, it's at the top of my list to try out the next time I'm in that area.
