Best Burger -- StL

I'm looking for the best big, thick juicy burger I can get in St. Louis. My favorite for most of my life has been the cheddarburger at The Fatted Calf, medium-rare with a char. But I fear that with the ownership change last year, the patties got smaller and the cooking less consistent. I am not looking for a thin, fastfood burger like Steak'n'Shake or White Castle, though I'll admit they hit the spot at certain latenight times. I don't tolerate smoke or ridiculous attitude, so O'Connell's is out. Points for flame-grilled, accurate cooking to order, and the closer to Clayton the better. Is Blueberry Hill my best alternative?

Burgers at the Royale on Kingshighway are my favorite. It's non smoking which is a huge plus

I dont see at all what the attraction is to their burgers. I went there with some friends one night,
The Kobe burger, was terrible. One of the worst burgers I have ever had.
My two friends ordered the regular burger. They also said "meh"...

There was a thread on STL about good burgers that I cannot find. One place that caught my eye in that is Cardwells at the Plaze. It was expensive, but supposedly excellent. I also see you have mentioned Seamus McDaniels. I would try them as well.

Lastly, did you used to post on MoHeads?

No, FOTD, I don't recall ever posting or even knowing about MoHeads.

A couple of weeks ago I had an excellent burger at the Down Under on the south side of Manchester road a few blocks east of I-270. It's set back in a deep parking lot and very un-noticible from the road. Perfectly cooked MR. stay away from their greenbean side -- only mediocre. If your trying to avoid the starches go with the cole slaw. The onion rings were excellent. I didn't try the fried potatoes but they looked good. Smokers kept in the bar. Nonsmokers in the dining room.

Yes Blueberry Hill (although I prefer Oconnell's but agree about the smoke being unacceptable). When is St Louis going to get a restaraunt/bar smoking ban like we do in more civilized cities!!

Blueberry Hill is in The Loop, on Delmar. I think officially it is University City -- just a couple of blocks north of Washington University, east of Clayton, west of Forest Park and downtown. It is a fun place -- quite a few rooms, darts and games on one side, a couple of bars, lots of rock'n'roll memorabilia specializing in the hometown hero, Chuck Berry. Good big burgers (Fatted Calf used to be a bit better) and lots of other bar food, sandwiches, salads, and even some entrees. Live music sometimes. Worth checking out -- I like it better than some of the places on the landing at the riverfront.
