Zeppe's pizza. What type of reputation in ohio ?
I just returned to Upstate NY from a business trip in Cleveland (actually Aurora) OH. I tried a pizzeria by the name of Zeppe's (which I had never heard of. Evidently it is an Ohio chain (rated Ohio's #1 pizza claims the menu). The menu was quite extensive, but I was craving pizza and decided to try some. When I entered the store I was a bit disapointed the pizza looked a bit "odd". I am a NY thin slice guy, and it appeared the Zeppe's pizza had some type of fluted crust and looked somewhat deep dish chicago style.
Needless to say I tried and was was quite pleased. I was very good. In fact, one of the tastiest pizzas I had ever tried. The sauce was nice and tomatoey and tasted fresh with a hint of garlic.
Anyway, I was wondering what it's repuatation on Ohio was ? Is is disdained becuse it is a chain (is it ?) or is it revered ? really just curious where my taste buds landed.
As a displaced New Yorker, I am always in search of decent pizza here in Cleveland. The "Cleveland style" is too thick in the crust and blah in the sauce for my taste. Zeppe's is one of the better "Cleveland style" - I believe the fluted crust is a Greek contribution. But its still just a chain. If you visit Aurora again, you'll get a better pizza at Vito's. The best "New York Syle" pizza in Cleveland is Vincenza's, located in downtown. Marotta's in Cleveland Hts. also makes a nice pie.

I lived in Akron/Cleveland for 5 years (back in the halcyion early 90's). When I lived there the prominent pizza/rib joint was Geppetto's. I don't recall a Zeppe's, but it looks like they've taken over the territory. I don't know about the #1 claim since they're exclusive to NE Ohio.
