Wow!! Great Birthday Dinner at XIX!
Went to XIX to celebrate a birthday...it was an outstanding meal in terms of service, food, atmosphere and value!! The room is just gorgeous and has a beautiful view from the 19th floor of the Park Hyatt at the Bellevue, so it was perfect for celebrating a special occasion!
Some special features of this hotel include an extensive raw bar; they claimed to have the best variety of oysters in the city, I think there were 8-10 varieties listed. My husband ordered a half dozen ($15) and they were great!
Another great appetizer was the "american style" sashimi...I had the fluke (which substituted for the marlin on the menu) ($12) which came with chopped peanuts, thinly sliced radish, mango and yuzu cream sauce. It was so good I ordered seconds! A sashimi tasting sampler is also available and was priced at $18. Others in our party had the prawn cocktail ($16), and the calamari with sweet and sour sauce ($12).
Entrees are reasonably priced most in the $18-$25 range. A romantic aspect of this restaurant is their entrees for two (which are available also as half portions) including a seafood clay pot ($55/$34) and whole roasted chicken ($45/$25). The priciest item on the menu is a prime bone in ribeye for two at $75.
Our group enjoyed the pork chop, roast chicken, pierogies, mahi mahi and red snapper. I loved the snapper filet ($18) which was steamed and served with basmati rice and cilantro chutney, also came with a side of okra "masala". The only complaint on the entrees was the small portion size on the mahi mahi special. On the other hand, the portion on the chicken was huge!
Desserts ($9) included a chocolate souffle, pistachio parfait, a chocolate pate (kind of like a warm brownie) topped with a toasted marshmallow. Yum!!
I found the prices to be a very good value considering the quality... including tax and tip the bill was bout $80 per person which included: 2 cocktails ($12 each) , 3 glasses of pinot grigio ($9 each), a glass of sauvigon blanc ($12) sparkling water ($7), 6 appetizers, 3 salads , 5 entrees, 5 desserts and 3 coffees.
Another point to note: in the adjacent "cafe" they serve a 3 course prix fixe lunch ($19) and dinner ($30) that comes with a salad & dessert buffet, and a choice of 3 entrees. Looked like a great value! The cafe is a nicely decorated room as well although not as elegant as the restaurant.
This restaurant is a value-priced alternative to special occasion establishments as Le Bec, Fountain and La Croix. Since the food was absolutely terrific, we'll come here again!
One of our absolute favorite places to dine in Philadelphia. Have always had great meals, great service, great atmosphere, and great wine list. The sashimi is wonderful as is their seafood clay pot. Definitely a special ocassion place to dine but one of the best in the city. BTW, we've had very good Restaurant Week dinners there as well.
