I've been to both and I happen to like both for different reasons. Both are "modern" takes on a NY steakhouse. Both offer updated twists on preparation and sides etc. both are expensive. Both have great ambiance. Reservations would be highly recommended for both. However, I think Porterhouse edges out Quality Meats though, but just by a bit. By the way, there really is no discount high quality steakhouse in NYC. I eat at Luger's in Great Neck two weeks ago and a steak for 2 was $85--for just steak--which is typical in the area
Considering adding BLT Steak to your list.

I went to Porter house this week because it was in the vicinity of my hotel and the weather was bad. I wanted to have a New York steak for a while and did so. It cost 45$ and even though it was good, I did not think it was worth the price. That said, the restaurant is beautiful and the service is excellent.. They treat patrons very well. I was even treated to dessert by the waitress. I asked for rare and it arrived perfectly like I wanted to. I have to add that I hesitated also between Quality meats and Porter house also but I am glad at having dined there.

Uncle Jack's Steakhouse is on 56th, b/t 5th & 6th. They've got a 10-oz. filet mignon for $35. We've never been to there or to the other two.
